Many basketball players from the United States want to continue their playing careers after college. Some find their way into professional careers with teams overseas. Former CWU men’s basketball standout Giovonne Woods is among them.
Gio, now 27, is in his fourth season playing professionally abroad. He recent signed with Duros de Lara in Venezuela. Last season, he played in Austria’s top professional league with the Kapfenberg Bulls, where he averaged 8.0 point, 3.4 rebounds, 4.5 assists—one of the league’s top 3 marks—and 1.1 steals per game. Woods helped the team make it into the East Central Europe league semifinals.
Woods has played also professionally in Spain and with the Olympia (Wash.) Reign in the International Basketball League.
“Gio was a key contributor to our team that made it to the [NCAA Division II] West Regionals in 2009,” recalled CWU head men’s basketball coach Greg Sparling. “I’m glad to see that he’s continuing his dream of playing professionally and I look forward to hearing from him about his experiences when he comes back home.”
Woods graduated from CWU in 2009, receiving a Bachelor of Science in Recreation and Tourism, with a specialization in recreation management.
