What is email spoofing?

Email spoofing is the act of impersonating the sender’s email address to make the email appear it is coming from someone other than the actual source. Email spoofing is common tactic among phishing emails as the email appears to come from a trusted source.

How do I identify email spoofing?

  • Check the sender’s name and address for authenticity
  • Sender asks you to share sensitive data over email such as a list of student names and emails.
  • There are suspicious links or attachments

I have identified email spoofing, now what should I do?

Using the Report Message add-on feature in Outlook, please select “Phishing”. Once a message has been reported as phishing, the email will be sent to Information Security Services for review and necessary action.
