The Division of Student Success strives to be a trusted partner with our academic faculty and support the overall experience of students. At CWU, we have a great deal of experienced, professional, educated and talented staff members who have created a number of presentations and opportunities that we believe can have a great impact on student success. While these are applicable for out of the classroom learning we also believe that there can be an impact by having these types of presentations within the classroom. With this in mind the Office of Student Involvement is launching and coordinating an ASL division wide initiative known as “Don’t Cancel That Class” designed to support our students and faculty.

Program description
Don’t Cancel That Class is designed to offer education and training in the classroom beyond the course subject matter. These presentation topics are already taking place in Student Success to student organizations, training for student leadership, and student programming in the residence halls. These myriad of presentations are an option for faculty as a replacement lecture in lieu of cancelling class when they may be away for expected travel, conferences, or research plans.

As part of the university’s and ASL strategic plan, learning is taking place inside and outside the classroom. This initiative is a new opportunity to integrate life skills with the content knowledge of the classroom learning experience. This program offers a chance to reach more of our student population while meeting the three underlying goals of the strategic plan. Keeping students engaged in the classroom provides more opportunity for growth and learning, thus contributing to their overall success and retention as a student. Engaged students retain at greater levels and consistent class times and meetings allows for engagement on a regular basis, even if a faculty member is not able to be in class on a specific day.

How does it work?

  • Faculty members that know they are going to miss a class or have a sudden need to find a replacement can choose a presentation from the list provided.
  • Once they have chosen a specific presentation faculty will submit an online request.
  • The request will be sent to the Office of Student Involvement and sent out to the appropriate presenter.
  • The presenter will follow up with the faculty member to let them know if they are available.
  • Faculty members will need to provide the presenter with an attendance list if they would like the presenter to take class attendance.
  • Following the class, presenters will distribute an evaluation.
  • Evaluation results will be compiled through the Office of Student Involvement, and a copy will be provided to the faculty member and the presenter.

  • There is no guarantee that a speaker will be available for a requested time as all speakers hold full-time positions at CWU, however requestors will be asked to rank their top 3 programs to ensure opportunity to support. Requests are encouraged to be made at least 10 working days before the class date requesting.
  • Presentations can be altered only by approval of the creator. Presentations were designed to meet specific learning objectives.
  • In rare occasions speakers may be working on-call emergency response for the university and may have to leave the presentation or cancel at the last minute for unforeseen circumstances. If so, the speaker will call the department administrative assistant, send an email to the faculty member and arrange for a sign to be posted at the specific class location.
  • All presentations are designed to be approximately 50 minutes to one hour in length.
