January 28th 2019 is Data Privacy Day. Data Privacy Day started in 2008 between the United States and Canada. This was a celebration for the data protection day in Europe which originated January 28th 1981. The signing of convention 108 was the first international treaty to reflect privacy and data protection.

The information that you use every day is extremely sensitive. Any information on social media sites, online shopping, and even subscription accounts may lead to detrimental consequences if they are taken in the wrong hands. Some examples of data that should be protected are: credit information, Social Security Numbers, Bank Information, Addresses, Phone Numbers, etc. Each of these data types need to be protected at all times because of their sensitivity.

Central Washington University and our Information Security Department is putting on an event for the recognition of Data Privacy Day. On Monday January 28th @ 7:00PM and 9:00PM in the SURC Theatre. There will be a showing of the 1983 version of War Games. This movie is supposed to be a fun way to get students and staff to learn a little about data privacy and enjoy it at the same time.
