[Central OUR] Resources for Summer Undergraduate Research

Notice Type:
Notices
Event Date:
Thu, 07/02/2020

I am reaching out from the Office of Undergraduate Research to let you know about some resources to support any undergraduate research work you are doing this summer.

  • OUR will be sponsoring a weekly research teatime on Fridays at 2pm starting July 10th.

Grab your favorite beverage and join us to take a moment and celebrate the academic discoveries our students have made over the week.  Register for the event here https://forms.gle/UdWjyX7DxaRBpE987 and you’ll receive the weekly zoom link.

  • GRAD CAMP 2020 for students graduating in 2021

OUR will also be holding bi-weekly professional development opportunities for students who are preparing to graduate in the next year. Register for the event here https://forms.gle/KPnJToUfvuTMeQLc9 and you’ll receive the bi-weekly zoom link.

CUR provides support for faculty and students who are doing undergraduate research work. CWU is an institutional member of CUR so it’s free for you to login and access the resources. There are individual divisions within the program that each provide topic-specific support, so I get a lot out of the Math, Computer Science, and Stats Division but there is also support for other science and social science fields, arts & humanities, education, and more (https://www.cur.org/who/governance/divisions/).

I especially appreciated a CUR webinar in May to discuss developing virtual undergraduate research programs with a recommended timeline available for doing summer work with students.  The webinar talked about the importance of setting your expectations for minimum and maximum that a student could hope to accomplish within one summer of work and the importance of discussing how to stay in contact over the summer. How are you going to check in regularly? When do you email? When do you text? Have you thought of using communication tools like Slack or Discord?  If you are interested, email me and I can share the resources.

Thank you for your work to support undergraduate research and creative projects over the year. We will continue to update the OUR website (http://www.cwu.edu/undergrad-research/) with these and more resources to support your work.
