(Ellensburg, Washington) – Chavez King Leadership Institute is recruiting new cohort members to join their passion for public service. The cohort participates in mentoring, social justice and public service around the community. Interested students with leadership skills and at least a 3.0 G.P.A. can pick up applications in SURC 256. Applications are due May 24. Students admitted to the cohort will received a $1,000 need-based tuition waiver.

Hence the name, Martin Luther King Jr. and Cesar Chavez’s values continue to lay the foundation for this cohort. Students will engage in community service, attended weekly meetings and plan public service projects. They work closely with the Kittitas Learning Coalition, APOYO food bank, Center for Leadership and Community Engagement and various other groups.

Martin Luther King Jr.  once said, “The function of education is to teach one to think intensively and to think critically. Intelligence plus character - that is the goal of true education.” The cohort focuses on developing student leaders by means of experimental learning opportunities, exploration of real-world issues, and continuous self-analysis and reflection. Members will continue the vision of connecting leaders to their communities while broadening their knowledge base related to advocacy, policy, and public support. The cohort is a place for people to embrace the legacy and philosophy of civil rights activists.

Center for Leadership and Engagement Center is sponsoring this cohort. For more information contact Elizabeth Vidaurri at
