Central Washington University is a regionally accredited institution through the Northwest Commission on Colleges and Universities (NWCCU). The NWCCU is one of six regional accrediting associations that are recognized by the U.S. Department of Education. Institutional accreditation is important as it qualifies CWU and enrolled students for access to federal funds to support teaching, research, and student financial aid.
Institutional accreditation is regularly renewed (or "reaffirmed") by the NWCCU. This reaffirmation occurs through regular reports and site visits. In addition to these reports and visits, CWU also communicates regularly with the NWCCU about new programs and changes to curriculum, teaching sites, institutional leaders and organizational structure.
CWU's institutional accreditation was last reaffirmed in January, 2010, as a result of an accreditation report and site visit in the fall, 2009. The accreditation reaffirmation process has significantly changed so that it is completed in a seven year cycle and through interim reports and visits. The Year One summary report presents CWU's Mission, Core Themes, and Expectations. This report describes what the university sets out to do, and how CWU will use data to make improvements and confirm mission achievement. The Year Three Mid-Cycle Evaluation report provides evidence of institutional processes, evaluation, and examination of mission fulfillment and sustainability.

The Year Seven report will update prior submissions and add chapters on Resources and Capacity, Planning and Implementation, Effectiveness and Improvement, and Mission Fulfillment, Adaptation, and Sustainability. The entire review cycle runs from 2011 to 2018, with periodic reports. In addition to reports, there will be site visits in 2014 and 2018.
