ESC FAQs

ESC Frequently Asked Questions

1. What are civic engagement hours?

Civic engagement hours are volunteer hours that you spend helping out different individuals, organizations, and departments on campus and in the local community.

Each organization is required to have at least a minimum of fifteen civic engagement hours per quarter. At least five of those hours must be dedicated to serving at another ESC organization’s event.

The purpose of doing civic engagement hours is not only for ESC organizations to keep their good standing, but also to fulfill the mission of the ESC, as well as making a strong presence among the community.

2. What are/aren’t counted as civic engagement hours?

Civic engagement hours can be counted from hours helping out at events, programs, and services sponsored by ESC organizations, clubs, university, and local community entities other than the ESC member's own organization. This means an organization cannot count their own events, tabling, or related activities hosted by that organization as civic engagement hours, since it benefits the organization themselves.

Example:
a. EQuAL helped PolyCentral with putting on Polyfest -> hours can be counted because they helped out another organization.

b. FASA tabled in SURC to raise awareness about certain events happened in the Philippines -> hours can’t be counted because this activity is put on to fulfill the mission of the organization themselves.

c. BSU volunteered with the Wellness Center and helped tabled at Wellness Center’s event to raise awareness about student’s drinking issue -> hours can be counted because they helped out another organization.

d. CSA tabled at the Wildcat Days to promote their organization -> hours can’t be counted because they tabled to benefit themselves.

3. Where can I turn in civic engagement hours?

The form can be found online at https://www.cwu.edu/ascwu/esc-forms . You need to download the form, fill it out (one form per event) and send it to the current ESC executive board members through email, or turn it to them in person. We do not have an online submission, so if you turn it in online, it might have been on Clubs & Organizations instead, which would go to V.P. of Clubs & Organizations and not the ESC.
