ELLENSBURG, Wash. — The CWU Department of Art will host a special reception in honor of Dr. Shari Stoddard at the opening for her solo exhibition titled Reciprocal Immortality. After fourteen years on the faculty as a professor in art education, Dr. Stoddard will retire at the end of this academic year. The reception will take place on Thursday, January 9, from 5:00-7:00 p.m., in the Sarah Spurgeon Gallery.
Dr. Shari Stoddard joined the CWU Department of Art faculty in 2000, where she is currently an Associate Professor in Art Education and Director of the Visual Art Teaching Program. In 2003 she started a student chapter of the National Art Education Association and began Friday Children’s Art Classes, where elementary school students visit campus to learn thematic art lessons. In addition to teaching at CWU Dr. Stoddard has taught art education at Indiana University, the University of South Carolina, and Ball State University. Her resume includes an extensive list of scholarly papers presented at national and international conferences, including the Oxford Education Research Symposium, in Great Britain.
In recognition of Dr. Stoddard’s accomplishments as both an educator and artist, the exhibit Reciprocal Immortality will feature fiber arts (such as woven rugs, coil vessels, and loom-woven fabric), drawings, paintings, and mixed media pieces. In 2005 Dr. Stoddard was selected for two international artist residencies, one in Balatonfured, Hungary, and another at Mount Bruce in New Zealand. Her artwork has also been exhibited nationally at venues such as the University of Michigan School of Art and Design, and locally at Gallery One Visual Arts Center, and the Larson Gallery in Yakima.
Reciprocal Immortality will remain on display through January 26. Sarah Spurgeon Gallery is located in Randall Hall on Dean Nicholson Boulevard and is open weekdays 10:00 a.m. to 3:00 p.m., and on weekends, 1:00 p.m. to 4:00 p.m. The gallery will be closed on January 20 for the Martin Luther King, Jr. Day holiday. Admission is free. For more information, please go to http://www.cwu.edu/art/Current-Schedule.
