Infill by Amy Babinec opens Thursday, April 1

Infill exhibit by Amy Babinec Opens Thursday, April 1

The CWU Sarah Spurgeon Gallery will host a solo exhibition of drawings and paintings by Evanston, Illinois, artist Amy Babinec. The exhibit will be on view to the public from April 1 through April 24. A webinar artist talk will take place on Thursday, April 1, from 4 to 5 p.m. To register in advance for the Zoom webinar go to: https://cwu.zoom.us/meeting/register/tZ0kcOipqzosHtFWvWi0oukQLYRXz5pRPHj1

Amy Babinec’s artwork focuses on lost memory, trauma, and DIY archaeology. An upbringing in the coal country of Illinois has informed her practice of documenting abandoned mines.

Babinec states, “I am drawn to domestic objects that have been left in the mines as trash, such as fragments of teacups, spoons, and jars. For me these domestic fragments become relics of previous generations, prompts for memories, and reminders of loss and longing. I process these fragments and ruins in my paintings and drawings, rendering them as archaeological specimens.“

Babinec received her MFA from the University of Chicago, her MA in art history and archaeology from the University of Maryland, and her BFA from the School of the Art Institute of Chicago. She currently teaches painting and drawing at colleges in the Chicago area and is an artist-educator at the Museum of Contemporary Art Chicago. Her work has appeared in exhibitions nationwide.

Sarah Spurgeon Gallery is located in Randall Hall on Dean Nicholson Boulevard and is open weekdays 10:00 a.m. to 3:00 p.m., and on Saturdays, 1:00 p.m. to 5:00 p.m. Please note that all CWU safety protocols will be in place, including the use of face coverings.
