Students in Art 236, Renaissance-Mid-19th c. Art, are tasked with creating Tableaux Vivant of iconic works of art. A successful tableau requires an in-depth understanding of the original work. Students must consider issues such as composition, space, lighting and color as well as more nuanced aspects of the work such as gesture and facial expression. The project forces students to address a particular era’s approach to creating works of art; by translating a two-dimensional image into three-dimensions they come to understand how the original was constructed and how the artist manipulated space.
