CWU Alum Being Inducted to the Washington State Music Educators Hall of Fame

Central Washington University alumnus Don May has been selected to be inducted into the Washington Music Educators Hall of Fame.

May graduated from CWU in 1991 with his undergraduate degree in music education and in 1999 with his master’s in music. From there, May was hired by the Ellensburg School District and for 19 years taught band at the middle school, and jazz band, symphonic band, wind ensemble, and street marching band at the high school.

“During my undergraduate years, Central’s music department encouraged us to volunteer and observe in music classrooms around Ellensburg,” said May. “Professors knew students needed to practice application of theory and teaching concepts to solidify strong teaching habits. To this day, I use the techniques, knowledge, and wisdom taught during my undergraduate and graduate years at Central. Each professor continues investing in me and my students.”

In 2018, the Pasco School District offered May a position as a band teacher at Stevens Middle School where he currently teaches three 8th grade and three 7th grade bands, a jazz band, and a percussion class.

Throughout his teaching career, May has been named Eastern Washington Veterans of Foreign Wars Teacher of the Year, Regional Music Teacher of the Year, Surprise Lake Middle School Teacher of the Year, and Ellensburg School District Teacher of the Year two different times.

May is honored to be inducted into the Washington Music Educators Hall of Fame and never thought this would be something that he would be honored with.

“Knowing many of the previous Hall of Fame inductees, I’m speechless and overwhelmed with gratitude," said May. "Many of my mentor teachers and Central professors are in the Hall of Fame and knowing many of the accomplishments of each inductee, I’m humbled to be nominated, selected, and soon inducted. I am the culmination of so many music directors who invested in me, so to have my name among the giants within music education is a great honor.”

May and eight other teachers will be inducted to the WMEA Hall of Fame over President’s Day Weekend in Yakima, WA. For more information on this event, or to learn more about the Washington Music Educators Association, please visit their website.
