Introduction

The art museum you work for has asked you to clean out their basement. In the back corner, you discover a box holding a clay vessel. By looking at the artifact you can tell it is old.  You happen to specialize in Ancient Greek pottery and you suspect this may be from a Greek Period. As the museum's conservator, it is your job to manage, preserve, and research this rare find. It is your job to discover the importance of documenting and preserving artifacts from civilizations of the past.


Task

As an art conservator, it is your job to determine the condition and any other key information about the artifact. Remember, you will be creating a sketch of the vessel found in the museum. Your vessel should be an original design and follow design elements found in a certain Greek Period. You will need to research and find out which shape and design is appropriate for the Greek Period you choose for the writing portion of the assignment. In writing, you will describe how the artifacts appears. Is it broken in pieces? Is it in perfect condition? You will use appropriate art vocabulary and terms learned in class. It will be your job to research which period in Greek history this piece was mostly likely created. The project will also include the sketch of the ceramic vessel "discovered" and give reasons to why you believe it was created in the particular period and what it was used for. As a conservator you may want to include what future preserving method is appropriate or why you believe this piece is valuable to the community. Your paper needs to be 3 pages in length. The project will also be presented to the class. This can be done by video taping, a poster presentation, or PowerPoint.  Each presentation needs to be approximately 6 minutes.

To help, consider the following, you do not need to answer each. However, consider including several in your paper.

  • Where should you start?
  • Will a graph, concept map, or picture help?
  • What do you know about art conservators?
  • How much do you about Greek history? Where could you find more information from? 
  • Do you have enough information to complete the task?
  • How will you create your presentation?
  • How can the info you find be organized or displayed to make it useful?
  • Once you have all of the info you need, what is the best way to use it and complete the task?
  • Have you checked the rubric and task to make sure that you have completed all aspects of the task?

Conclusion

Ancient ceramics had great importances and uses in Greek life.  Studying and preserving the ceramics of the past gives future generation the chance to understand ancient cultures and civilizations. Do you have any object of significance made from ceramics? If these were preserved for 500 years, what could future generations learn about your life?
