Service Learning

Women's studies lends itself to the blending of theory and practice. We encourage minors to combine academic study with service learning. Here are some possibilities in the Ellensburg area:
  • working with the Empowerment Center to lead discussion groups or other programming in Green Hall, the Women's Experience dorm
  • doing an internship with ASPEN (Abuse Support and Prevention Education Now), an organization dedicated to ending domestic violence and sexual assault, and to advocating for the survivors of such violence.
  • working with community groups in Yakima or Toppenish, focusing on issues of racism, sexism, and the self-esteem of young women.
  • working with the Family Resource Center to develop a community resource guide for women and families or to design and participate in an outreach program for middle and high school students on reducing the incidence of sexual assault and dating violence.

Interested students should consult the Women's Studies Director in order to draw up a Cooperative Education Agreement. Students can register for WS 490 for 1-6 credits.
