| News: | A team of students from the Philosophy and Religious Studies Department participated in the regional tournament of the Intercollegiate Ethics Bowl on Saturday, November 15. The team came in third place, ahead of teams from such schools as the University of Washington, Washington State University, and Seattle University. The third place finish may qualify them to compete in the national tournament in March 2009 in Cincinnati, Ohio. |

| News: | Mr. Hough presented a paper at this past weekend's 1st Annual Columbia Valley Undergraduate Asian Studies Research Symposium, held at Washington State University. His paper, "The Role of Evil in Early Daoism," examined the complementary nature of good and evil in China's indigeneous high religion. Drawing parallels between the Daoist conception of harmonizing seeming opposites, and the relationship between Batman and the Joker, Mr. Hough's paper presented a unique and highly innovative perspective on ethics. |

The paper evaluated a new version of the Daoist classic Daodejing, "A Creative Transcreation of the Tao Te Ching" by Ashok Kumar Malhotra. At this meeting Central Washington University was also chosen to host the 2007 ASDP Annual Meeting. |

| News: | Jeffrey Dippmann presented two papers at the recent National Meeting of the American Academy of Religion in Philadelphia. “Transmitters or Innovators: Re-presenting Authentic Religion in Chinese Religions Sourcebooks” examined the current state of undergraduate textbooks in providing well-rounded, authoritative selections on Chinese religion. “Sages, Transcendents and Shamans: Daoist Imagery in the Liezi" argued that the Daoist classic Liezi presents a favorable portrayal of immortality in its reworking of passages from the Zhuangzhi. |

| News: | Chenyang Li has been awarded a Seed Grant from the Faculty Development & Research Committee. The grant supports his ongoing research into harmony and its relevance to the modern world. The book project, entitled "The Confucian Ideal of Harmony (He) for a Peaceful World," examines the classical tradition of harmony within Confucianism and argues that harmony can be justified on the basis of value pluralism and is applicable for contemporary world philosophy and cultural politics. |

| News: | Chenyang Li was granted sabbatical leave for 2005-2006 in order to work on his book length manuscript on Harmony and Value Pluralism. Professor Li is spending his sabbatical in Hong Kong, where he has been appointed Visiting Senior Research Fellow at City University of Hong Kong. While in China, he has participated in several conferences, including the Beijing Forum on Harmony and Joint Prosperity of Civilizations.
