| News: | A team of students from the Philosophy and Religious Studies Department participated in the regional tournament of the Intercollegiate Ethics Bowl on Saturday, November 15. The team came in third place, ahead of teams from such schools as the University of Washington, Washington State University, and Seattle University. The third place finish may qualify them to compete in the national tournament in March 2009 in Cincinnati, Ohio. |

| News: | Mr. Hough presented a paper at this past weekend's 1st Annual Columbia Valley Undergraduate Asian Studies Research Symposium, held at Washington State University. His paper, "The Role of Evil in Early Daoism," examined the complementary nature of good and evil in China's indigeneous high religion. Drawing parallels between the Daoist conception of harmonizing seeming opposites, and the relationship between Batman and the Joker, Mr. Hough's paper presented a unique and highly innovative perspective on ethics. |

out of Villanova University. This paper draws on her long-standing
interests in gender, embodiment, the work of Emmanuel Levinas and her
more recent research in criticial race theory. She will also be presenting a paper entitled "Strangers and Natives: Gadamer and Colonial Discourse" at the 2006 Society for Phenomenology and
Existential Philosophy conference in Philadelphia. This paper explores
the resources that hermeneutical theory provides for understanding the
impact of colonialism (and post-colonialism) on our understanding of
ourselves and others.

"Riding the Wind with Liezi: New Essays on the Daoist Classic," co-edited with Ronnie Littlejohn (Belmont University) offers new interpretations of a long-neglected text by leading scholars in the fields of Chinese religion and philosophy. The other project is a major revision of his dissertation, "Emptying Emptiness: Graduated Teachings in the Zhaolun," which focuses on a reevaluation of a fifth-century Chinese Buddhist text. |

| News: | Heidi Szpek's services as translator of Hebrew tombstones has once again been accepted for another project, Bagnówka Quest, originating in Poland. One of the aims of this project is to create an online website and database of old tombstone photographs with translations from non-extant E. European cemeteries. The project and website are named after "a district of Bialystok which contains the largest Jewish cemetery in north-east Poland. This cemetery is located next to the Catholic cemetery which in turn adjoins the Orthodox cemetery. These three cemeteries in Bagnówka which lie peacefully next to each other are for us a potent symbol of what we are seeking to achieve - partnership and good-neighbourliness" - writes project originator/Polish scholar Tomasz Wisniewski. The website will soon be available for public access.
