UNDERGRADUATE STUDENTS
Name:Ethics Bowl Team  
News:A team of students from the Philosophy and Religious Studies Department participated in the regional tournament of the Intercollegiate Ethics Bowl on Saturday, November 15. The team came in third place, ahead of teams from such schools as the University of Washington, Washington State University, and Seattle University. The third place finish may qualify them to compete in the national tournament in March 2009 in Cincinnati, Ohio.

News:Justin Sanders recieved the 2008 Raymond A. Smith Award for Achievement in Scholarship for his essay entitled "Can Ethics be Regarded as Knowledge?" at the College of Arts and Humanities Banquet.

News:The following Philosophy & Religious Studies Majors have had their research papers accepted for presentation at the 12th annual Pacific University Undergraduate Philosophy Conference, April 18-19, 2008, Forrest Grove, Oregon. They are: Phillip Downes, "Refuting Moral Luck" Casie Dunleavy, "What the World Needs Is a Moral Marx" Travis Petersen, "Influences of Phenomenology and Logical Positivism on the Natural Sciences" Ashley Goo, "Anarchy, State, and Utopia or a Life 'After Virtue': MacIntyre's Stand against Nozick's Position and Lack of Moral Desert" Christian Mecham, "Cast Off Body and Mind: The Teachings of Buddhism as Applied to a Phenomenological Model" They will present their papers at the conference.

News:Tyler Killam, a History Ed major and Religious Studies minor was awarded a scholarship from the Scottish Rite of Washington for the 2007-2008 academic year.

News:Danielle Martinez, a major in Public Relations and minor in Religious Studies was accepted to the Colorado State University's Master of Science in Higher Education and Student Affairs. In addition she will be working as an Assistant Hall Director for first-year experience students.

News:Justin Sanders will be presenting a paper entitled "Forgetful Metaphysics," on Levinas and Heidegger, at the Pacific University Undergraduate Philosophy Conference in Portland, Oregon, in April.

News:KathyMae Dickinson, a double major in Philosophy and Physics, will present a paper on mind-body dualism at the Pacific University Undergraduate Philosophy Conference in April 2007 in Portland, Oregon.

News:Chris Moore has been accepted into the Masters of Social Work Program at Eastern Wasington University for fall 2006. Chris will be graduating this spring with a BA in Philosophy/Religious Studies Specialization. This past year he has served as President of the Philosophy and Religious Studies Club, Vice President of Central's chapter of Phi Sigma Tau (International Honor Society in Philosophy) and on the CAH Dean's Council of Students.

News:Mr. Hough presented a paper at this past weekend's 1st Annual Columbia Valley Undergraduate Asian Studies Research Symposium, held at Washington State University. His paper, "The Role of Evil in Early Daoism," examined the complementary nature of good and evil in China's indigeneous high religion. Drawing parallels between the Daoist conception of harmonizing seeming opposites, and the relationship between Batman and the Joker, Mr. Hough's paper presented a unique and highly innovative perspective on ethics.

News:Mr. Fernandes delivered a paper entitled “God as an Institutional Fact: A New Approach to the Question of God’s Existence” at the 57th Northwest Conference on Philosophy, October 21 at Seattle University. He is pursuing an Individualized Masters Degree in Buddhist philosophy.

News:Dr. Bartlett has been accepted into the 2008 APA/AAPT Graduate Teaching Seminar, August 7th-10th, at the University of Guelph, Ontario. The seminar, which is for current or recent graduate students, and is run by the American Philosophical Association and the American Association of Philosophy Teachers, is limited to 20 participants.

News:Chenyang Li, Philosophy and Religious Studies, published a paper "The Ideal of Harmony in Ancient Chinese and Greek Philosophy" in the journal Tao: A Journal of Comparative Philosophy, VII.1 (March 2008). In the same issue he also published a book review of Daniel Bell's Beyond Liberal Democracy: Political Thinking for an East Asia in Context (a CHOICE 2007 Best Academic Title).

News:Dr. Matt Altman has published a book entitled "A Companion to Kant's Critique of Pure Reason" from Westview Press (2007). The book focuses on Kant's own arguments rather than secondary texts and scholarly debates that may otherwise distract from what Kant himself is attempting.

News:Mr. Zac Hymes received his M.A. in Philosophy from Washington State University in May 2007, and has recently received an appointment as an adjunct instructor with Green River Community College.

News:Paul Charlton, an emergency medical technician and recent graduate from the philosophy program, has been working in South Asia on a health education project funded by the American Alpine Club since January 2005. Beginning in October he has been volunteering as a relief worker in Pakistan in the areas devastated by the earthquake. News:Mr. Green has begun doctoral studies at SUNY-Stony Brook. He was accepted by the philosophy doctoral programs at the University of Oregon and SUNY, and chose to go to Stony Brook, one of the most prestigious programs for Continental thought in the U.S.
