News:The following Philosophy & Religious Studies Majors have had their research papers accepted for presentation at the 12th annual Pacific University Undergraduate Philosophy Conference, April 18-19, 2008, Forrest Grove, Oregon. They are: Phillip Downes, "Refuting Moral Luck" Casie Dunleavy, "What the World Needs Is a Moral Marx" Travis Petersen, "Influences of Phenomenology and Logical Positivism on the Natural Sciences" Ashley Goo, "Anarchy, State, and Utopia or a Life 'After Virtue': MacIntyre's Stand against Nozick's Position and Lack of Moral Desert" Christian Mecham, "Cast Off Body and Mind: The Teachings of Buddhism as Applied to a Phenomenological Model" They will present their papers at the conference.

News:Tyler Killam, a History Ed major and Religious Studies minor was awarded a scholarship from the Scottish Rite of Washington for the 2007-2008 academic year.

News:Danielle Martinez, a major in Public Relations and minor in Religious Studies was accepted to the Colorado State University's Master of Science in Higher Education and Student Affairs. In addition she will be working as an Assistant Hall Director for first-year experience students.

News:Justin Sanders will be presenting a paper entitled "Forgetful Metaphysics," on Levinas and Heidegger, at the Pacific University Undergraduate Philosophy Conference in Portland, Oregon, in April.

News:KathyMae Dickinson, a double major in Philosophy and Physics, will present a paper on mind-body dualism at the Pacific University Undergraduate Philosophy Conference in April 2007 in Portland, Oregon.
Name:Chris Moore  
News:Chris Moore has been accepted into the Masters of Social Work Program at Eastern Wasington University for fall 2006. Chris will be graduating this spring with a BA in Philosophy/Religious Studies Specialization. This past year he has served as President of the Philosophy and Religious Studies Club, Vice President of Central's chapter of Phi Sigma Tau (International Honor Society in Philosophy) and on the CAH Dean's Council of Students.
Name:Corey Hough  
News:Mr. Hough presented a paper at this past weekend's 1st Annual Columbia Valley Undergraduate Asian Studies Research Symposium, held at Washington State University. His paper, "The Role of Evil in Early Daoism," examined the complementary nature of good and evil in China's indigeneous high religion. Drawing parallels between the Daoist conception of harmonizing seeming opposites, and the relationship between Batman and the Joker, Mr. Hough's paper presented a unique and highly innovative perspective on ethics.

News:Mr. Fernandes delivered a paper entitled God as an Institutional Fact: A New Approach to the Question of Gods Existence at the 57th Northwest Conference on Philosophy, October 21 at Seattle University. He is pursuing an Individualized Masters Degree in Buddhist philosophy.

News:Dr. Altman's article, "Kant on Sex and Marriage: The Implications for the Same-Sex Marriage Debate," has been accepted for publication by the journal Kant-Studien.

News:Dr. Altman and Dr. Coe's co-authored article, "The Self as Creature and Creator: Fichte and Freud Against the Enlightenment," will appear later this year in the journal Idealistic Studies.

News:Apple Igrek's article "Collective Practices and Collective Faith: An Account of Religious Experience from Mysticism to Pragmatism," an expansion upon a paper given last year at the "Politics, Pluralism, and Religion" conference, will be included in a book of essays inspired by the conference to be published next year.

News:Dr. Matt Altman has published a book entitled "A Companion to Kant's Critique of Pure Reason" from Westview Press (2007). The book focuses on Kant's own arguments rather than secondary texts and scholarly debates that may otherwise distract from what Kant himself is attempting.

News:Heidi Szpek's article "And in their Death They Were Not Separated: Aesthetics of Jewish Tombstones in Eastern Europe" has been accepted for publication in the International Journal of the Humanities.

News:Heidi Szpek has submitted a National Endowment for the Humanities grant proposal entitled "The Grodno Gubernya Poland Imaging Project". This two year project seeks to photograph and document the Jewish epitaphs from Jewish cemeteries in NE Poland.

News:Heidi Szpek has received both a CAH Travel Grant and an International Studies and Programs Committee Advisory Grant to present her paper He Walked with a Wooden Leg: Jewish Tombstone Epitaphs A Fading Legacy, at the 2007 conference Legacy of the Holocaust: The World Before, The World After to be held May 24-26, 2007, at the Jagiellonian University in Krakow, Poland.

News:Heidi Szpek presented a conference paper, entitled "Here Lies a Perfect and Upright Man": Jewish Epitaphs from Drohiczyn, Poland, at the 13th Annual Western Jewish Studies Association at Portland State University, March 18-19, 2007. This paper is part of her ongoing research into the literary heritage of Jewish epitaphs.

News:Heidi Szpek was awarded a SOAR Grant Writing Appointment for the Spring 2007 term to prepare a National Endowment for the Humanities Grant. This grant, entitled "The Grodno Gubernya Imaging Project", seeks to document, catalogue and create a database of the extant Jewish epitaphs in NE Poland.

News:Volume 5 of "East-West Connections: Review of Asian Studies" has just been published. An outgrowth of the Asian Studies Development Program's Annual National Conference, the peer-reviewed journal was guest edited by Jeff Dippmann. Included in the volume are articles co-authored by Hong Xiao (Sociology) and Chenyang Li (Philosophy) entitled "Ethics and Leadership: A Comparison of Hobbesian Men, Gilliganian Women, and Confucian Asians," and Devona Ensmenger (CWU Class of 2002, Geography), Josh Goldstein and Richard Mack (Economics) entitled "Talking Trash: An Examination of Recycling and Solid Waste Management Policies, Economies, and Practices in Beijing."

News:Mr. Zac Hymes received his M.A. in Philosophy from Washington State University in May 2007, and has recently received an appointment as an adjunct instructor with Green River Community College.
Name:Paul Charlton  
News:Paul Charlton, an emergency medical technician and recent graduate from the philosophy program, has been working in South Asia on a health education project funded by the American Alpine Club since January 2005. Beginning in October he has been volunteering as a relief worker in Pakistan in the areas devastated by the earthquake. News:Mr. Green has begun doctoral studies at SUNY-Stony Brook. He was accepted by the philosophy doctoral programs at the University of Oregon and SUNY, and chose to go to Stony Brook, one of the most prestigious programs for Continental thought in the U.S.
