UNDERGRADUATE STUDENTS
Name:Hal Ott  
News:Four flute students of Hal Ott competed in the Northwest Musicfest in Spokane. Holly Sayer received the silver medal for her second place finish, and Emi Ogawa won the gold medal and will perform the Reinecke Flute Concerto with the Spokane Symphony Orchestra on Wednesday, May 13 at the Fox Theater.

News:On Novemebr 2, 2006 the CWU Trombone Choir (made up of 20 undergraduate students from the music department) performed at the Seasons in Yakima for the Yakima Music Club. The trombone is directed by assistant professor of trombone, Dr. Mark Babbitt.

News:Dr. Gary Weidenaar was invited to serve ae an adjudicator for the Oregon State Activities Association (OSAA)State Choir Championships held May 7-9, 2009. Working with 2 other judges, over the course of the 3 day competition Dr. Weidenaar heard and rated 61 choirs, which presented over 300 pieces of choral music total.

News:Bret Smith presented in session and displayed a poster on the CWU Preparatory String program at the 2009 national conference of the American String Teachers Association in Atlanta, and as member of ASTA's Research Committee helped coordinate the transfer of the Journal of String Research to ASTA. Dr. Smith also served on the organizing committee, reviewed submissions, and presented a paper on Washington's Classroom-Based Performance Assessments in music at the 2nd International Symposium on Assessment in Music Education at the University of Florida. This work was funded in part by a College of Arts and Humanities Travel Grant.

News:Gary Weidenaar served as an adjudicator/clinician for Washington State University's fall choral festival, held on October 25, 2008. There were 18 choirs at the festival. Dr. Weidenaar gave 40 minute clinics to 5 of them, along with 5 20 minute one-on-one sessions with each of the 5 ensembles' directors.

News:Gary Weidenaar conducted the 120 member NE Nevada Honor Choir in Elko, NV on October 20 & 21, 2008. This was Dr. Weidenaar's second invitation to conduct the choir - the first had been in 2005. The choir sang a 30 minute program for an audience of 500 at the Elko Convention center.

News:Dr. Smith's project, "The Status of Orchestra Programs in the Public Schools," was selected for SEED grant funding by the Faculty Development and Research Committee. This study, in collaboration with Dr. Michael Alexander of Baylor University and the National String Project Consortium, will survey a representative sample of schools nationwide and provide key demographic and implementation data to evaluate current trends and assist policy-makers.

News:Gary Weidenaar was engaged by the Mrs. Washington pageant, held June 21, 2008 in Moses Lake, to provide music. The pageant wanted the National Anthem and the Battle Hymn of the Republic. Dr. Weidenaar created an arrangement of the National Anthem for the pageant. Weidenaar also oversaw the hiring of a 32 piece orchestra of CWU students which recorded the Peter Wilhousky arrangement of the Battle Hymn under his direction, and hired a 12 voice choir comprised of selected CWU Chamber Choir members to sing live.

News:Gary Weidenaar served as a rating judge for the traditional choir day at the Columbia Basin College Festival in the Tri-Cities.

News:Dr. Bret Smith was one of three faculty members selected by the Professional Education Advisory Board to receive a 2008 Crystal Apple award for service to teacher education.

News:Mark Lane just began his two year term as President of the Washington Music Education Association. During his term he will represent Washington State at the National Assembly and will be involved in National policy decisions involving music education in addition to leading the State Association.
Name:Vijay SIngh  
News:Vijay Singh adjudicated over 30 high school choirs in the Boise area April 15-16, 2008. Other adjudications this quarter included the Puyallup school district high school division and Wenatchee district high school divisions. Singh also performed the bass solos in CWU's production of the Beethoven 9th Symphony May 18th, 2008 as part of the Presidential Concert Series.

News:Dr. Bret Smith recently attended the Music Educators National Conference Biennial Inservice Conference in Milwaukee WI, where he served as member of the Music Educators Journal editorial committee and chaired meetings and panel discussions for the Special Research Interest Group on Asseesment. Dr. Smith recently presented at the Washington Music Educators Association annual conference. He has been invited to contribute a chapter on motivation in music to the upcoming MENC Handbook of Music Learning published by Oxford University Press. He is also one of the organizers of SynergiaNW, a benefit concert bringing classical and contemporary artists from the Northwest together to benefit youth music causes, to occur in spring of 2010.

News:Gary Weidenaar served as adjudicator/clinician for the Eastern Washington Music Educator's Association (EWMEA) large group festival held at Spokane Falls Community College March 24-27, 2008. Working with a team of three other adjudicators, Weidenaar provided taped comments and ratings for 43 choirs during the four-day festival, while providing clinics for 25 of the choirs. About half of the clinics were 15 minute sessions on stage. The other half of the clinics were 25 minute sessions in a rehearsal room, and included strategies for sight reading as well as working on the performed pieces.

News:Gary Weidenaar served as a guest clinician for two Boise, Idaho high schools on Mon. & Tues., March 17 & 18, 2008. On Monday, Weidenaar worked with 4 choirs at Centennial High School, and was guest clinician for their pre-festival concert in the evening. On Tuesday, he worked with three choirs at Eagle High School.

News:Gary Weidenaar served as an adjudicator for the Columbia Basin Music Educators Association (CBMEA) large group festival held at Kamiakin High School in the Tri-Cities on March 20, 2008. The one-day festival included 19 choirs. Weidenaar rated and provided taped comments to all 19 choirs, and gave separate half-hour clinics to seven of the choirs.

News:Nikolas Caoile, Director of Orchestras, has been selected as one of 40 conductors to compete at the 9th Cadaques Conducting Competition in Spain. The winner of the competition will be awarded a cash prize and will be engaged to conduct over 30 European orchestras over the course of the next three years.

News:In January Jon Hamar was awarded a Golden Ear Award for Emerging Artist by Earshot. Earshot is a Seattle based jazz organization that each year gives awards citing extraordinary achievment in the field of Jazz music in the Northwest region. News:CWU Alumni Don Immel gave a masterclass for trombone students in the music department at CWU on October 29, 2006. Don is currently principal trombone of the Sønderjyllands Symfoniorkester in Sønderborg, Denmark. Prior to Denmark, he was principal trombone of the Honolulu Symphony and associate professor of trombone at the University of Washington. While a student at CWU, Don studied trombone with current director of bands, Larry Gookin.

Name:Hal Ott  
News:The newly-formed, Nothwest Flute Consort (including the CWU Flute Choir and over 30 professional flutists from around the Northwest) will perform a free concert in the State Capitol Rotunda in Olympia on May 13 at 2:00 p.m. Hal Ott will conduct and has served as coordinator. The program is divided into three segments: world/folk music, classical music, and jazz (featuring some notable jazz flutists throughout the region such as CWU alumni Matt Schneider as well as Bob Esperanza, Tom Russell, Nancy Curtis, Ann Linquist, andFronda Woods). The variety of styles presented will certainly appeal to a large audience. One of the most exciting things about this program is the inclusion of three contrabass flutes.
