News:Keri Bannister is the first winner of the History Department's $500.00 Study Abroad Scholarship for her spring break trip to Greece which is faculty lead by Dr. Pappas.
Name:Angela McDermottDepartment: Theatre Arts
News:is currently serving an internship with Disney at the DisneyWorld theme park. After an extensive interview and audition process Angela is working as an entertainer at the park. Among her duties are appearing daily in the parade. She has also moved through the audition process to the point that she is now qualified to participate in stage shows as well. Her internship continues through August 2010.

News:While at CWU Amanda performed in many productions and also worked in the costume/makeup/hair department of theater. At the end of her senior year at CWU she was offered and accepted the position of costume shop intern at the Seattle Repertory Theater. While she was there she made a lot of connections in the industry and also fine tuned her skills in wigs/makeup. While at the Rep she was offered to work at the Seattle Opera as a makeup artist. She has worked 4 shows since then and LOVES it! Also while in Seattle she has done modeling for various companies and fashion shows. Her most proud booking was for Seattle Sound Transit. She also competed as Miss Queen Anne USA at the Miss Washington USA pageant. She plans on competing again in the Fall of 2010. Recently, Amanda was hired to assist with wigs in the production of Sleeping Beauty at the Pacific Northwest Ballet.

News:is one of only six student playwrights invited to present a play in the Ten Minute Play Festival at the Kennedy Center American College Theatre Festival for Region VII at the University of Nevada-Reno, Feb. 15-19, 2010. Shank’s play “Wolf at the Door” will be fully produced at the festival and Shanks will receive hosting as an invited artist. KCACTF Regional VII includes Washington, Oregon, Idaho, Wyoming, Montana, Colorado, Alaska, Northern California and Northern Nevada. Two of the six plays at the regional festival will be selected as national semi-finalists and will enter into consideration as National Finalists. The National Finalists will be invited to the national festival in Washington, D.C. in April 2010.

News:Ben Lundgren, freshman, won first place in his division at the National Association of Teachers of Singing (NATS) regional competition in Spokane, WA nov. 14. 2009. Ben, a baritone and cellist, studies voice with Professor Vijay Singh and sings in University Chorale and plays in the CWU Orchestra. Ben won a cash award and aspires to be a professional musician.

News:Sasha Rawlinson, sophomore, won first place in her division at the National Association of Teachers of Singing (NATS) regional competition held in Spokane, WA Nov. 14, 2009. Sasha, a soprano vocalist, studies voice with Professor Vijay Singh and sings in the University Chorale, Chamber Choir, and Vocal Jazz 1. She won a cash award and aspires to be a professional singer. Sasha is the daughter of CWU faculty member and IT professor (and local rock star) Dave Rawlinson.

News:Two current BFA-Musical Theatre candidates Joseph Sasnett and Ben Sasnett have been invited to perform in a Broadway musical revue touring through Europe in summer 2010.

News:Four flute students of Hal Ott competed in the Northwest Musicfest in Spokane. Holly Sayer received the silver medal for her second place finish, and Emi Ogawa won the gold medal and will perform the Reinecke Flute Concerto with the Spokane Symphony Orchestra on Wednesday, May 13 at the Fox Theater.

News:Nicolas was accepted into the 36th National Juried Photo Exhibition at the Larson Gallery in Yakima, WA. There were over 400 submissions and and the work was juried by Ellen Garvens, Associate Professor of Photography from University of Washington.
Name:Ethics Bowl TeamDepartment: Philosophy
News:A team of students from the Philosophy and Religious Studies Department participated in the regional tournament of the Intercollegiate Ethics Bowl on Saturday, November 15. The team came in third place, ahead of teams from such schools as the University of Washington, Washington State University, and Seattle University. The third place finish may qualify them to compete in the national tournament in March 2009 in Cincinnati, Ohio.

News:David Gay, a third-year Master of Arts in Theatre Production candidate, reports that his recent production of "Guys and Dolls" at Alpharetta High School in Alpharetta, GA garnered group and individual awards. "We entered an affiliate of the Jimmy awards - Shuler Hensley Awards," says Gay. "'Guys and Dolls' was nominated for eight awards. We won for Orchestra and our Miss Aidelaide moves to the Jimmy awards this spring. Keep your fingers crossed - the winner gets $100,000 to attend the New York school of her choice."

News:Ian Stacy has won this year's Best Overall Paper prize from the Phi Alpha Theta Northwest regional conference for his paper entitled "Under an Atomic Sky: Origins of the Hanford Nuclear Reservation's Infamous Green Run." As a result of winning this award, Ian is now able to present this work at the AHA-PCB conference, to be held in August in Pasadena. So congratulations to Ian!

News:Dr. Karen Blair, History Department Chair, received an award at the Women's Achievement Celebration from the campus Empowerment Center on Wednesday, March 3, 2010, for her academic career devoted to the study and teaching of women's history and women's issues.

News:Bret Smith, Associate Professor of Music, presented 4 invited sessions at the Maryland Music Educators Association state conference in Baltimore February 26-27, 2010. The presentations covered beginning and intermediate issues in string teaching, differentiating instruction in the string class, and current research on motivation in music teaching and learning.

News:Bret Smith recently completed a study, co-authored with Dr. Michael Alexander of Baylor University, on the status of strings and orchestra programs in the United States schools. The technical report has been submitted to the Journal of Research in Music Education, and with the support of the National String Project Consortium and NAMM a White Paper based on the study will be released at the 2010 national conference of the American String Teachers Association in Santa Clara, CA this February. This project was funded in part by a SEED grant from CWU's Office of Graduate Studies and Research.

News:An expanded version of Sura Rath's essay, "Carnivalized Public Corruption: Old Feudalism and New Democracy in All the King's men, Wise Blood, and Raag Darbari," first presented at the Forum International Conference in Varanasi (India) in Decmber 2008, has appeared in Comparative American Studies (vol. 8, no. 1) published in London. Rath presented his paper,“A ‘Mortal Thought’ for a New Global Race: Classless, Casteless, Genderless,” at the Forum International Confernece in Trivandrum (India) in December 2009. He is a founding member of this conference designed to bring together scholars from all over the world. The conference started in 1998 and has successfully run every year. College of Arts and Humanities is a co-sponsor of the Journal of Contemporary Thought published by the Forum group. Rath is one of the editors, and Professor Liahna Armstrong serves on its editorial board.

News:Professor Sura Rath directed an international conference, "Abraham Lincoln Without Borders," December 18-20, at the Indian Institute of Technology--Madras in Chennai, India, as part of the celebrations of Lincoln bicentennial organized by the Lincoln Bicentennial Commission of the US Congress. The conference was the only one organized for all of Asia. Twentyfive scholars presented papers. CWU was well represented at the conference. Rath presented a co-authored paper, "Abraham Lincoln's Legacy in Asia." Ms. Christine Henderson, a CWU alumna of the College of Arts and Humanities and currently a Bailiff in Seattle, participated in the conference and chaired a session on the impact of Lincoln on the framing of India's constituion. Mr. Ry Downey, a CWU English Education major, attended the conference as part of his Independent Study project with Rath.

News:Professor Vijay Singh, Music, was invited to guest conduct the first Evergreen School District High School Honors Choir in Vancouver, WA Nov. 19-20, 2009. Five high schools participated and the choir was comprised of 80 of the finest singers in the district selected by audition. The choir performed two compositions by Professor Singh and received standing ovations from the audience in attendance. Professor Larry Gookin conducted the Honors Band at the same event.

News:Dr. Nadine Pederson spent the past summer in Paris pursuing her groundbreaking study on French theatre history. Through the examination of primary documents, specifically French law books and financial records, Dr. Pederson has unearthed evidence of a previously undiscovered Master of the Revels system in Renaissance France paralleling the English system. The continued support of her study is not merely impressive for CWU, but imperative for the discipline and our expanding knowledge of world theatre history.

News:George Bellah and Elise Forier completed an international workshop and culminating performance in Noh Theatre at the Noh Theatre Project in Bloomsburg, PA. Bellah and Forier will be collaborating over the next 18 months on mounting a classic Greek work in the traditional Noh Theatre style. This project will serve to further not only their own scholarship and research interests, but also support the CWU Asia/Pacific Studies program.

News:Dr, Terri Brown, director of the musical theatre BFA, and David Brown, musical theatre director for the Department of Theatre Arts, have been invited to return to Edgewater Records in Atlanta, GA, for three recording projects in summer 2010. Dr. Brown will be singing on the projects and Mr. Brown will be arranging the material.

News:David Barnett recently attended two sound conferences in Dallas, Texas. The first was called "Sound Reinforcement for Operators," where Barnett learned to operate, adjust and troubleshoot sound systems in order to achieve the best sound quality possible. The second conference, "Sound Reinforcement for Technicians," focused on the assembly and installation of sound systems based on venue space and production requirements.

News:This years recipient of the CAH Staff Recognition Award, Leslee Caul, has established a thriving marketing department to support the Theatre Arts' degree programs and the productions of Central Theatre Ensemble, and launched a national ad campaign and marketing plan in 2005 that is causing quite a buzz both regionally and nationally. Caul was presented the award at a gathering of the college faculty and staff, hosted by CAH Dean Dr. Marji Morgan. Caul is a 1994 graduate of CWU's Department of English and has worked in the Department of Theatre Arts for 11 years.

News:Dan Jenkins reports "I have just landed the job I've been dreaming of since I was 11. On Jan 4th I will officially be a Walt Disney Imagineer." Jenkins, who was named the 2007 College of Arts and Humanities Distinguished Alumni in Theatre Arts, is also currently working on lighting design projects in California, Florida, Hong Kong and Paris.

News:Central Theatre Ensemble’s New Plays for Youth Playwriting Project has found great success. The first commissioned play, “Mama Tomcat’s Flying School,” by Spring Hermann, was the Youth Theatre Tour production in 2009, with a sold-out schedule. Seattle-based teacher and nationally renowned playwright Ramon Esquivel, will be in residence this winter to begin the development process for his new play, “Luna.” Staged readings will be presented for the public and for invited elementary school audiences winter 2010, with the play slated for the 2012 Youth Theatre Tour. “Luna” is the story of a young girl who has trouble making friends because her family is always moving on to the next seasonal job. In an effort to find a lasting bond she befriends the moon in this stirring story of the isolation that often plagues the children of migrant workers.

This first-year program is off to a vibrant start with enrollment at full capacity with a growing interest and enthusiasm from prospective new students.
