Name:Madeleine Cartwright Department: Theatre Arts
News:“PS – I Love You,” a 10-minute play by Madeleine Cartwright, a senior theatre arts performance major, was chosen for presentation at the 2008 Kennedy Center American College Theatre Festival for Region VII. In a field of nearly 70 scripts submitted to this year's contest, Maddie’s has been chosen as one of six to advance to the finals. The scripts were chosen by a panel of experts in Region II (mid-Atlantic region), who read the scripts "blind" (without any knowledge of the authors or schools who submitted). At this year's festival in Laramie, WY, award-winning student directors will cast and rehearse the plays, which will then be presented as staged readings. The winners of the regional 10-minute Play Contests are eligible to participate in a similar process at the National KCACTF Festival in Washington, DC in April.

News:I just wanted to let you know that I was recently hired on as the technical theatre and design instructor at Renton High School and have also been brought on as the Technical Director at the IKEA Performing Arts Center, our performance space which doubles as a very busy rental theater. Right now I am very busy developing a brand-new curriculum and managing the theater. There is no drama program here, but hopefully next year I will be helping to get that started up again as well. Also, as you may know, I got married last August and (big news) now my wife and I are expecting our first child this June! Yeah, life for me is a little bit exciting. I miss everyone at CWU and am so thankful for the knowledge I gained in ALL areas of theatre while I was there, I use it every day! I hope all is well there, I hope to come over sometime before the end of the year so I will have to stop in.

News:Rachael Birks won this year's Phi Alpha Theta Northwest Region "Best Overall Paper" prize for an extract from her MA thesis entitled "Dancing Cubanidad: Reconfiguring National Identity Through Fidel Castro's Cultural Project, 1959-1973." This means she gets funded by PAT to present this paper at the Pacific Coast Branch of the AHA conference in Honolulu at the end of July.

News:Al has received the College of Arts and Humanities Graduate Student Scholarship Achievement Award for his work titled "Aspects of British Identity as Exhibited in Accounts of Russia by British Visitors." The award comes with a certificate and cash award of $150. He was acknowledged at the CAH banquet on May 15.

News:Ellicia Mertens, MA third year candidate and director at Richland High, received five nominations for Joseph and the Amazing Technicolor Dreamcoat, including Outstanding Set Design, Outstanding Hair and Make-up Design, Outstanding Costume Design (honorable mention,) Outstanding Program Design, and Outstanding Performance for an Actress in a Lead Role (Lauren Smith as the Narrator). Eighty productions entered this year, making this is a huge honor for all those nominated. News:Stephen Moore has been chosen by the Awards Committee of the Washington State Historical Society's Board of Trustees to receive the Charles Gates Award for the best article, "Cross-Border Crusades: The Binational Temperance Movement in Washington and British Columbia," to appear in the PACIFIC NORTHWEST QUARTERLY in 2007. He has been invited to be their guest at the Washington State Historical Society's Annual Awards Luncheon at noon on June 21, 2008, at the Washington State History Museum in Tacoma.

News:Nikolas Caoile, Director of Orchestras, has been selected as one of 40 conductors to compete at the 9th Cadaques Conducting Competition in Spain. The winner of the competition will be awarded a cash prize and will be engaged to conduct over 30 European orchestras over the course of the next three years.

News:In January Jon Hamar was awarded a Golden Ear Award for Emerging Artist by Earshot. Earshot is a Seattle based jazz organization that each year gives awards citing extraordinary achievment in the field of Jazz music in the Northwest region. News:Professor Larry Gookin will be guest conductor of the APAC International Honor Band in Kobe, Japan this February. APAC is made up of six international schools; Brent International School Manila, Osaka International School and Canadian Academy Japan, Seoul Foreign School Korea, Shanghai American School and the International School of Beijing China. Professor Gookin recently received news that he is the recipient of University of Oregon's 2008 Distinguished Alumnus Award for the School of Music. He will be acknowledged during the University of Oregon's graduation ceremony this June in Eugene, Oregon.

News:Vijay Singh performed with the professional a cappella jazz quartet Just 4 Kicks as featured guest artist at the Olympic College Jazz Festival Nov. 17th in Bremerton, WA. Singh also adjudicated over 20 high school/junior high vocal jazz ensembles, many of whom were directed by recent CWU music education majors.

News:Vijay Singh conducted the North Carolina Middle School Honors Choir at the NCMEA conference held in Winston-Salem, NC Nov. 9-12. Vijay also gave an interest session for music educators on the topic "Musical Multi-tasking for Choral Directors". Prior to his guest conducting in NC, Vijay adjudicated the Inland Empire's National Association of Teachers of Singing competition Nov. 3rd at CWU and had two of his voice students place in the top 3 of their respective divisions ( his high school division student won the HS division).

News:Vijay Singh sang the bass solos for Yakima Symphony Orchestra's production of Mozart's Requiem Nov. 1st in Yakima at the Seasons Concert Hall. Singh also adjudicated jazz choirs at the Edmonds Jazz Symposium held at Mountlake Terrace High School the previous weekend. Fellow CWU faculty member Chris Bruya was also invited to adjudicate jazz bands at the symposium.

The select ensemble, comprised of the finest high school jazz vocalists in BC, sang a program featuring 3 of Singh's arrangements/compositions. Vijay also gave an interest session for music educators at the conference on rhythm section techniques for jazz choir directors.

News:Vijay Singh guest conducted the British Columbia Music Educators Association Secondary School Honors Jazz Choir in Vancouver, BC, Canada October 17-20th. The group was a select ensemble comprised of the finest auditioned students from the province of British Columbia. Singh also gave a workshop on jazz rhythm section/drumming skills for choral directors attending the conference. He will be adjudicating the Edmonds Jazz Symposium with fellow jazz faculty member Chris Bruya on October 27th, at Mountlake Terrace High School in Edmonds, WA.

News:David Barnett recently attended two sound conferences in Dallas, Texas. The first was called "Sound Reinforcement for Operators," where Barnett learned to operate, adjust and troubleshoot sound systems in order to achieve the best sound quality possible. The second conference, "Sound Reinforcement for Technicians," focused on the assembly and installation of sound systems based on venue space and production requirements.

News:This years recipient of the CAH Staff Recognition Award, Leslee Caul, has established a thriving marketing department to support the Theatre Arts' degree programs and the productions of Central Theatre Ensemble, and launched a national ad campaign and marketing plan in 2005 that is causing quite a buzz both regionally and nationally. Caul was presented the award at a gathering of the college faculty and staff, hosted by CAH Dean Dr. Marji Morgan. Caul is a 1994 graduate of CWU's Department of English and has worked in the Department of Theatre Arts for 11 years.

News:Joanna will be performing her one-woman country musical “100 Heartbreaks” for a six-night, fully staged, run at the Capitol Hill Arts Center in Seattle, Feb. 15,16, 22, 23, 29, March 1. The play, is a tongue-in-cheek story about an aspiring country singer trying to accumulate songwriting inspiration by suffering through 100 heartbreaks. It is directed by Jennifer Zeyl (a former Stranger Genius Award winner and Artistic Director of Washington Ensemble Theatre), with musical direction by John Osebold of the band “Awesome.” Joanna is also producing the show, funding the project, and serving as marketing director. The SCNAEA participates in Ware Fare on campus and the NAEA conference in New York City.
