Web Development: Uploading Web Pages

To Upload Web Pages, Follow These Steps:

See important note for Mac users.

  1. First edit your Web pages as needed.
  2. Next, open Windows Explorer (or My Computer) and browse to the directory where your updated files are located.
(Many departments have their local files stored in C:\Web Files\)
  3. Highlight the files that need to be uploaded. (Hint: You can select more than one file by holding down the Control key on your keyboard while using your mouse to single-click each needed file. To select all files for uploading, go to Edit —> Select All.)
  4. Copy all selected files by going to Edit —> Copy.
  5. Then browse to where your Internet files are. For most departments, your Web pages are on Zeus and will display as an I: drive. In the I: drive, you will see the name of your department. Open this folder and you will see another folder called public_html. In this folder is where all of your live Web documents reside. This means if you erase something out of here, it is gone! Be careful.
  6. Once inside the public_html folder, paste the files you copied by going to Edit —> Paste. You should get a message that asks if you would like to overwrite the existing files. Yes, overwrite the old with the new.
  7. Did you get a strange error message? Details on error message.

(1) Let's say I wanted to update a Web page called uploading_pages.html.

(2) I start my Dreamweaver program, open my local copy of the file, uploading_pages.html, and make any needed changes. When I am done editing, I save the changes.

Next, I open Windows Explorer (or My Computer) and browse to where this local copy resides. In this example, my files are located on the C: drive in a folder called Web Files.

Browse to where your local file is saved

(4) Highlight the file you want to update by single-clicking the file. Then copy this file by going to Edit —> Copy.

(5) Next, you will need to browse to where you live Web documents are stored. For most departments, your Web pages are stored on Zeus, which will appear as an I: drive. In this directory, you should see a folder with your department name on it. Inside of the department folder, you should see another folder called public_html.

(6) The next step is for you to paste the file you previously copied into this folder by going to Edit —> Paste.

Paste file in

(7) Last, you will see a window appear informing you that a file with this name already exists. It asks whether or not you want to overwrite the existing file. Yes, we want to overwrite this file with the file we have just edited.

Overwrite confirmation window

(8) That's it! You can now check your Website to make sure that the changes have indeed been implemented. If you do not see the changes right away, try refreshing your page.
