News:Micah Parker, Senior Vocal Performance Music major, won 1st place in Division V of the Intermountain Empire National Association of Teachers of Singing competition held in Walla Walla, WA November 4-5, 2011. Parker, a Bass-Baritone, is a student of Vijay Singh, MUSIC and has performed in the Music department's top vocal jazz ensemble, choirs, and operas since transfering from Olympic College a few years ago.

News:Tristan Hurd placed second, winning the silver medal at the Northwest Music Festival in Spokane. This award came with a $250 scholarship and a recital performance.

News:Junior Music Education/Performance Trombone Major, Christopher Wall, won the Gold Medal in the Brass Division at MusicFest Northwest this past week, resulting in, among other things, a live performance of the first movement of the Lars-Erik Larsson, Concertino with the Spokane Symphony.This is an extremely prestigious and competitive competition encompassing the entire Pacific Northwest Region.

News:Clara Mannino, CWU music major and student of Dr. Hal Ott won the Northwest Music Festival Young Artist Competition. As a Young Artist winner, Clara will perform the Bernard Romberg Concerto for Flute and Orchestra with the Spokane Symphony Orchestra on Wednesday, May 11 at the Met in Spokane.

News: CWU Trumpeter, Christi Wans placed third in the Tacoma Philharmonic competition. In the Young Artist Division she competed against other instrumentalist not just those in the brass family. Now in its fourth year, the Beatrice Herrmann Competition promotes excellence in musical performance, encourages young musicians in their pursuit of high artistic standards, and fosters a love for the performing arts in the community and throughout the Puget Sound region.

News:Piano performance major Erik Flaten was accepted to graduate school at New York University and offered an adjunct teaching position. He will start work on his Masters of Music in performance this fall.

News:John Geiger, French Horn performer in the music department won the following awards: Barry Tuckwell Scholarship-- $500 prize to attend any masterclass or workshop in the world-- he will use it to attend Marrowstone (if accepted there)-- he presented a CD of contrasting pieces and a written application with essay and recommendations. This is very prestigious, despite the relatively small amount. He also received the Paul Mansur Memorial Scholarship-- essay contest that entitles him to a free lesson with any Featured Artist at the symposium. He will have a lesson with Rick Todd of the LA film studios (now at U Miami). John is one of five finalists for the IHS Premier Solo Contest. He will perform/compete for the grand prize at the symposium, which is $1500 plus other benefits.

News:Vijay Singh, Music, completed a 3 day Artist-In-Residency at the University of Alaska-Fairbanks April 26-29th where he worked with Fairbanks area high school choirs, gave voice lessons/coaching to UAF students, performed a recital of Classical music, gave a vocal masterclass to UAF students, and performed a jazz concert with pianist Barney McClure.

News:Vijay Singh, Music, performed with jazz quartet Just 4 Kicks at venues in Sacramento and San Francisco, CA over the February 4-5th weekend. The performances were in support of Just 4 Kick's recently released album "Joyful Noise" which features a number of Singh's arrangements and an original composition.

News:Vijay Singh, Music, was featured guest conductor at the University of Nebraska - Omaha Honors Choir Festival in Omaha, NE January 5-6, 2012. Singh conducted a 120 voice honors choir selected from across the state of Nebraska. The concert featured a number of Singh's choral compositions.

News:Vijay Singh, Music, conducted the South Dakota All-State High School Honors Choir in Sioux Falls, SD October 28-29th. The choir was comprised of 1000 high school singers from across the state, and their performance was broadcast live statewide on South Dakota's PBS television station. The choir also performed 3 of Singh's compositions and combined with the All-State Orchestra to perform Beethoven's "Hallelujah from The Mount of Olives" with Singh conducting all 1200 combined instrumentalists and vocalists.

News:Vijay Singh, Music, conducted and performed with a cappella jazz group Just 4 Kicks at the 4th annual "Real Men Sing" workshop Oct. 1, 2011 in Everett, WA featuring 250 high school and junior high male singers. Singh also performed later that night (playing percussion) with the vocal group Groove For Thought (featured on last year's NBC show "The Sing Off") at Bake's Place Jazz Club in Issaquah, WA.

News:Vijay Singh, Music, adjudicated concert choirs and jazz choirs at the Columbia Basin College Jazz Unlimited Festival April 22-23, 2011 in Pasco, WA. The 2 day event draws choirs from across the Northwest and features adjudications and clinics for all participants. CWU Music faculty members Chris Bruya, Mark Lane, and Larry Gookin also adjudicated at the CBC Jazz Unlimited Festival for Wind and Jazz Bands April 15-16, 2011.

News:Vijay Singh, Music, premiered his new composition "Possum Gonna Play" with the combined McLoughlin Middle School and Enterprise Treble Choirs in Richland, WA April 15, 2011 at Hanford High School. The piece was commissioned through the third annual Commission Premiere Project which supports the commission of a new musical work composed specifically for middle school treble choirs in the Tri-Cities area. Singh was the featured composer and guest conducted the choirs as part of the day-long educational outreach program.

News:Vijay Singh, MUSIC, conducted CWU's premiere jazz vocal ensemble Vocal Jazz 1 at the national American Choral Director's Association conference in Chicago, IL MArch 11, 2011. The group was one of only three university vocal ensembles in the country selected to perform at the conference (selected through "blind auditions" from over 600 submissions) and performed an entire program of vocal jazz arranged exclusively by CWU alumns, directors, and current students. The group received an instant standing ovation and thunderous applause from the 2000+ audience attendees and were one of the "buzz groups" of the entire conference. CWU students described their performance as "the best gig of my life!".

News:Bret Smith, Associate Professor of Music, recently participated in the String Project Consortium sessions at the national conference of the American String Teachers Association in Kansas City, where he presented model program information from the CWU Preparatory String Program, as well as contribute to the Editorial Board of the String Research Journal. He will present a research paper at the annual conference of the American Educational Research Association summarizing findings relating to access and equity in the availability of arts instruction at the middle level in the era of No Child Left Behind.
