| News: | Gary Weidenaar adjudicated the Yakima Valley Music Educator's Association High School Choral Festival on April 11th at the A.C. Davis High School in Yakima. Along with two other judges, Weidenaar gave comments and ratings to each of the 14 choirs which sang throughout the day. He also gave 20 minute clinics to four of the choirs. |

| News: | Dr. Bret Smith, assistant professor of music, read a paper and presented a poster entitled "The Development and Implementation of Washington's Classroom-Based Performance Assessments" at the symposium "Integrating Curriculum, Theory, and Practice: A Symposium on Assessment in Music Education" held March 28-30 at the University of Florida in Gainesville. Dr. Smith also met with state officials from Florida, South Carolina, and Kentucky to discuss aspects of these state's assessment programs. As chair of the Music Educators National Conference (MENC) Special Research Interest Group on Assessment, he was able to meet and interact with many colleagues and discuss progress on several ongoing projects.
He has also recently been appointed Regional Chair of MENC's Special Research Interest Group on Teacher Education, and will serve as the Northwest liaison for this national group. |

| News: | Vijay Singh performed and adjudicated at the Powell River Vocal Summit in British Columbia March 30-31st, 2007. Singh performed with the professional a cappella vocal jazz quartet, "Just 4 Kicks", and was honored for his service to the festival and music education by receiving the prestigeous Frank DeMiero Award, given annually to a music educator who best represents the ideals and contributions founded by CWU alumn and legend Frank DeMiero. Singh has performed/adjudicated at the festival for over 12 years and has taken CWU's Vocal Jazz 1 Choir to perform as invited guests twice in the past 5 years. |

| News: | Vijay Singh performed a program of opera and musical theatre crossover works as part of the Yakima Symphony Orchestra's "Drawing Room Diversions" chamber music series held at the Yakima Musuem March 22, 2007. Accompanying Singh on piano was CWU Music faculty Adjunct Professor of Piano, Barbara Pickett. Singh has become a staple performer of the Drawing Room Diversions concerts and has performed every year as part of the series since 2001. Vijay's presence in Yakima will be even more noticable next year, as YSO conductor Brooke Creswell has contracted Singh to perform the Bass vocal solos in next Fall's YSO production of Mozart's "Requiem," to be performed November 1, 2007 at The Seasons in Yakima. |

| News: | Vijay Singh adjudicated high school choirs in Wenatchee as part of the district choir festival held at Wenatchee High School March 21, 2007. There were 34 choirs performing, and Singh was especially proud of a number of choirs directed by recent graduates of CWU Music Education undergraduate and graduate programs.....the strong presence of CWU alumni in the region reinforces the the commitment of the department to music education and its history of excellence! |

| News: | Vijay Singh guest conducted the Nebraska-Wesleyan University Honors Choir in February as part of the Nebraska-Wesleyan Choir Festival. Past conductors have included many well known conductors, such as Paul Salamunovich, Aaron Copeland, Simon Carrington, Gregg Smith, Robert Shaw, Elaine Quilichini, and Eric Ericson. The choir performed the Nebraska premiere of Singh's composition "Plaudite" as the opening number and sang two other of Singh's compositions as part of the program. Singh also received an unexpected honor: Dr. William Wyman, Director of Choral Activities at Nebraska-Wesleyan, made an unprecedented invitation for Singh to return next year and commissioned a new choral work to be given its world premiere in February 2008. |

| News: | Dr. Gary Weidenaar served as a logistical site coordinator for one of the two performance venues at the bi-annual American Choral Directors Association national convention held March 7-10, 2007 in Miami, FLA. The convention, attended by over 3,600 choral directors, featured 32 choirs from all over the US and beyond. Weidenaar "ran" the recently constructed 1900 seat Knight concert hall for the duration of the convention, spending between 12 and 15 hours there daily. He was praised in an email following the gathering by the Program Chair of the convention, who wrote, "I have never known anyone to do the job of Site Coordinator with such calm and 'grace under fire.' I have the greatest possible respect for your success on our behalf and so appreciate all the hours and effort you donated. Very well done, sir! Congratulations!" |

| News: | Vijay Singh guest conducted the Pennsylvania Collegiate Honors Choir in York, PA Feb. 1-3, 2007. The Honors Choir, comprised of over 80 college/university students from 10 Pennsylvania schools performed a number of Singh's compositions at the concert. Vijay also guest conducted the Nebraska-Wesleyan University High School Honors Choir Festival in lincoln, NB Fe. 8-10, 2007. |

| News: | Gary Weidenaar was invited by the Clark County School District (CCSD) in Las Vegas, Nevada to be the sole presenter for their in-service day on February 8. Seventy-five middle school and high school choral directors were in attendance. The CCSD, the 5th largest district in the country, opens between 5 and 10 schools a year. The main topic presented during the 6 hour meeting was "Concentration, Ready, Begin: Involving the Brain in Rehearsal", which included Dr. Weidenaar working with a 23 voice junior high choir and presenting a powerpoint presentation on the brain.

| News: | Bret Smith, Assistant Professor of Music Education, represented CWU at the event "Faculty Serving Washington" in the Capitol Building in Olympia January 31, 2007. This session, sponsored by the Council of Faculty Representatives, offers a showcase for faculty research that has an impact on citizens and communities in Washington and provides a forum for communication between higher education and the State Legislature. Dr. Smith presented his development of standards-based curriculum materials for string classes and the role of the CWU Preparatory String Program in undergraduate teacher education.
Dr. Smith also provided a teacher in-service session on January 27, 2007 in the North Thurston Public Schools, focusing on cello teaching, the development of assessments at the district level, and the use of newly developed statewide assessments in music.. |
