| News: | Dr. Michael Ervin has been invited to participate in a conference
entitled "We Shall Be All: Toward a Global History of the Middle Class,"
to be held at the University of Maryland, College Park, from April
27-29. The conference will include an international group of scholars
from Berlin, Glasgow, Liecester, and Ontario, as well as from assorted
U.S. institutions such as Grinnell College, Binghamton University,
Harvard University, the University of Missouri (Columbia), Northern
Arizona University, SUNY-Stony Brook, and the University of Virginia.
Dr. Ervin's paper, "Being an Agronomist in Revolutionary Mexico: The
Rise and Fall of the National Agronomic Society," is part of a
book-length manuscript entitled "The Art of the Possible: Agronomists
and the Middle Politics of the Mexican Revolution, 1908-40," which he is
planning to complete by the end of spring quarter.

| News: | At the behest of the African Students' Organization from the University of Illinois, Urbana Champaign, Dr. Maurice Amutabi will be the Guest Speaker at the Third Annual Forum to be held on April 8th, 2006 on the Topic: “AFRICA’S DEVELOPMENT IN THE GLOBAL ENCOUNTER”. The issue of development is complex and complicated, especially in reference to Africa whose economic, social, political development is the outcome of endogenous and exogenous factors as well as local, regional and global historical processes.

| News: | On March 18, Cummings and Dippmann chaired a panel and presented at the 12th Annual Meeting of the Asian Studies Development Program in Nashville, TN. Their panel, entitled "Infusing Southeast Asian Studies Into the Middle and High School Curriculum of Washington State," featured presentations by Teresa Ramirez (Adna Middle/High School) and Ann Marie DeCollibus (Ferndale High School), two of the participants in last summer's four week Fulbright-Hays Study Abroad Program in Cambodia, Vietnam and Thailand. The presentations illustrated how Teresa and Ann Marie have incorporated the experience into their own curriculum. The Fulbright-Hays grant was administered by Cummings, Dippmann, and James Cook (History). |

| News: | Donna Stack has been invited to participate in the exhibition "Exploring Place: Women Artists Working in Central Washington" in the Esvelt Gallery at Columbia Basin College. The exhibit expresses a holistic vision of place as a kind of text of humanity where nature, culture, history, and ideology intersect and which the viewer is invited to explore at many different levels. Donna Stack will also be participating in an artist presentation of her work prior to the opening reception on April 13, 2006. Artist presentation is from 6-7 pm in L102 with the opening reception to follow in the gallery from 7-9 pm. Columbia Basin College is located at 2600 N. 20th Avenue, Pasco, WA 99301. |

| News: | Dr. Michael Ervin just returned from the Latin American Studies Association meeting in San Juan, Puerto Rico. In addition to organizing and chairing a panel entitled "The Middle Politics of the Mexican Revolution," which included scholars from the U.S., Great Britain, and Mexico, Dr. Ervin also contacted colleagues who will help organize a summer institute for Washington State secondary educators this summer. The program, which will be partially funded by GEAR UP, will take up to twenty secondary educators to Mexico for nearly three weeks of study in Spanish, History, and Communication. Participants will spend four nights in Mexico City and two weeks in Oaxaca City. Events will include classroom Spanish and History study, tours of ancient ruins, colonial buildings, and modern marketplaces, as well as other assorted excursions including a cooking class in Oaxacan cuisine. For more information about the program, please contact Dr. Ervin. Leading the program with Dr. Ervin will be Dr. Rodney Bransdorfer (World Languages) and Lois Breedlove (Chair, Communication). |

| News: | Governor Christine Gregoire appointed Karen Blair, chair of the History
Department and historian of American women, to serve on her new
eleven-person Women's History Consortium. The group of legislators and
historians is mandated to launch a centennial celebration of Washington
Women's Suffrage for the year 2010 and produce a website offering
researchers a comprehensive directory of historical resources on the
state's women's. The first meeting of the consortium was held in Olympia
on March 16 and subsequent meetings will establish procedures for
carrying out the governor's mandate.

| News: | Michael Sherwin, Visting Lecturer in Photography and Digital Imaging, recently gave a talk about his work and attended an opening reception for a selected group exhibition titled "Double Vision | Shared Site" at the Jacobs Gallery in Eugene, Oregon. He also currently has work in a nationally juried exhibition titled "Hot and Now - Nine Photographers" at Gallery 115 in Greensboro, North Carolina. |

| News: | On Sunday, February 26th in the Concert Hall, Visiting Lecutrer in Photography and Digital Imaging, Michael Sherwin, along with the director of Central Washington University’s Chamber Choir and another filmmaker created a video installation, which coincided with a live performance of the “Suite de Lorca” written by a famous Finnish composer, Einojuhani Rautavaara. The synchronized installation consisted of compatible imagery, compiled from video-based observations of nature and travels through various environments, projected on two separate 9 x 12 foot screens placed on either sides of the choir. |

| News: | Andrew Kaufman is exhibiting a new body of work for his solo exhibition titled "Half-empty". "Half-empty" is an installation, which incorporates lights, plastic buckets, water and sound bites from interviews. The installation addresses the notion of "potentials for action". "Half-empty" is on view at Icebox Contemporary Art, which is located at 301A Puyallup Ave. Tacoma, WA. The exhibition runs from March 14-April 13, 2006.
