| News: | Spencer Clouse, a senior in the Design/Production BFA specializing in stage management, has been selected as one of eight students/recent graduates from across the country for the Stage Management Mentoring Project (SMMP) at the United States Institute for Theatre Technology National Conference (USITT) in Milwaukee, WI. At the conference, from March 18-23, 2013, Spencer will join the group of 8 young professionals and 8 professional mentors to do the following: (from the USITT website) "SMMP offers students and young professionals interested in stage management, the opportunity to participate in a practical training experience. With the support of professional stage managers, participants coordinate and manage the major events of the Annual Conference & Stage Expo. Students and mentors work together to prepare and realize the various and often complex events. Mentors are drawn from the ranks of established professionals who work in live performance venues." |

| News: | CWU art student Tanya Pierson received a Birkin Owart Arts and Humanities Grant for her project “It’s a Dog’s Life”. The project: provide 4 life-size concrete dog sculptures for the new off-leash dog park that will be included in the Rotary Park extension. These sculptures will be dedicated and placed in the park in Spring 2013. Tanya will be presenting at SOURCE and a downtown venue. |

| News: | The Vocal Jazz 1 ensemble received an invitation to perform at the Jazz Educators network (JEN) conference in Atlanta, GA this January. This is the second year in a row that CWU will be represented at this national conference. because these invitations are competitive nation wide, this is quite an honor. In addition, this is the second national invitation the vocal jazz group has received in the past three years (ACDA in Chicago two years ago). This seems to be a clear indication that the CWU Jazz program has distinguished itself as one of the best programs (if not the best) in the country.

Competing against four other provocative works, BODY LANGUAGE won the Audience Choice Award for Best Play. Payden is a first year graduate student at CWU, and is pursuing a M.A. in Theatre Studies. |

Billy will be defending his thesis on West Texas Folklore and the Development of Country Music in June. |

| News: | Alejandro Lee and five students from his Spanish 346: Spanish for Heritage Learners II class, Estrella Casio, Alejandro Espinoza, Sergio Flores Vélez, Andrés Ramos and Maura Ruiz, were invited to participate in the “Heritage Language Learners in the Spanish Classroom” workshop organized by the Center for Spanish Studies, the American Association of Teachers of Spanish and Portuguese, and the Instituto Cervantes on 2 Feb. 2013 at Bishop Blanchet High School in Seattle. Professor Lee and his students presented on pedagogical strategies in the heritage language classroom to about forty administrators and teachers of Westside schools, community colleges and universities. |

| News: | Drew Carter has accepted a position as Technical Manager at Texas A&M University-Corpus Christi, Performing Arts Center http://pac.tamucc.edu/: ‘This world-class acoustically-superb Concert Hall has pushed Corpus Christi to the forefront of cultural arts and entertainment in South Texas and features a 1500-seat Concert Hall with state-of-art acoustics, a striking 50-foot glass-walled lobby that faces Ocean Drive offering a beautiful 360-degree view of the Corpus Christi bay and the downtown skyline, and a versatile Greenroom for more intimate gatherings and receptions.’

| News: | Brian Popielarczyk has recently begun his appointment at the Pacific Conservatory of the Performing Arts in Santa Maria, California as a Master Electrician/ Assistant Lighting Design Professional Intern. His assignment includes two productions, "The Tempest" and "Fiddler on the Roof," in various lighting production and design capacities. Popielarczyk describes the opportunity as an excellent challenge, and is looking forward to continuing to work with the production team at PCPA. Popielarczyk is a 2012 graduate of the CWU BFA Design and Production specialization.

| News: | Central Theatre Ensemble’s New Plays for Youth Playwriting Project has found great success. The first commissioned play, “Mama Tomcat’s Flying School,” by Spring Hermann, was the Youth Theatre Tour production in 2009, with a sold-out schedule. Seattle-based teacher and nationally renowned playwright Ramon Esquivel, will be in residence this winter to begin the development process for his new play, “Luna.” Staged readings will be presented for the public and for invited elementary school audiences winter 2010, with the play slated for the 2012 Youth Theatre Tour. “Luna” is the story of a young girl who has trouble making friends because her family is always moving on to the next seasonal job. In an effort to find a lasting bond she befriends the moon in this stirring story of the isolation that often plagues the children of migrant workers. |
