News:Jeffrey Dippmann presented two papers at the recent National Meeting of the American Academy of Religion in Philadelphia. “Transmitters or Innovators: Re-presenting Authentic Religion in Chinese Religions Sourcebooks” examined the current state of undergraduate textbooks in providing well-rounded, authoritative selections on Chinese religion. “Sages, Transcendents and Shamans: Daoist Imagery in the Liezi" argued that the Daoist classic Liezi presents a favorable portrayal of immortality in its reworking of passages from the Zhuangzhi.

News:Chenyang Li has been awarded a Seed Grant from the Faculty Development & Research Committee. The grant supports his ongoing research into harmony and its relevance to the modern world. The book project, entitled "The Confucian Ideal of Harmony (He) for a Peaceful World," examines the classical tradition of harmony within Confucianism and argues that harmony can be justified on the basis of value pluralism and is applicable for contemporary world philosophy and cultural politics.

News:Chenyang Li was granted sabbatical leave for 2005-2006 in order to work on his book length manuscript on Harmony and Value Pluralism. Professor Li is spending his sabbatical in Hong Kong, where he has been appointed Visiting Senior Research Fellow at City University of Hong Kong. While in China, he has participated in several conferences, including the Beijing Forum on Harmony and Joint Prosperity of Civilizations.

News:Cynthia Coe has been awarded a Summer Research Appointment through the office of Graduate Studies, Research, and Continuing Education. The award recognizes the work she is doing on Freud and Nineteenth Century German Philosophy. The research will culminate in a co-authored collection of essays that examine Freud's contributions to central philosophical questions.

News:Chenyang Li's paper on "Li (Rituals of Propriety) as Cultural Grammar" has been accepted for publication in the journal Philosophy East & West. His other paper "Confucian Ideal of Harmony" will appear in the same journal in the October 2006 issue. His paper on "Analytic and Comparative Study of Chinese Philosophy" (in Chinese) has been accepted for publication in the Journal of Nanking University. He attended the "Beijing Forum: Harmony and Prosperity of Civilizations" in November 2005; his paper on "Tu Wei-ming's Concept of Heaven" will appear in the Conference Proceedings (Philosophy Section).

News:Professor Szpek's services have been accepted for assignment as Translator of Hebrew Tombstones for the JewishGen Online Worldwide Burial Registry, a program unit devoted to preserving Jewish heritage and affiliated with the Museum of Jewish Heritage, New York. Her first assigment is translating Hebrew tombstone inscriptions (c. 1800s-1910) from Khust, Ukraine (near contemporary Slovak Republic).

News:Professor Coe delivered a paper entitled “Contesting the Human: Levinas, the Body, and Racism” at the 57th Northwest Conference on Philosophy, October 22 at Seattle University. She also chaired a session at the Society for Phenomenology and Existential Philosophy, October 20, Utah Valley State College.

News:Dr. Altman, an adjunct faculty member in the Philosophy Department, delivered a paper entitled “A Kantian Defense of Gay Marriage” at the 57th Northwest Conference on Philosophy, October 21 at Seattle University. He has also published "Subjecting Ourselves to Capital Punishment: A Rejoinder to Kantian Retributivism," in Public Affairs Quarterly 19, no. 4 (Oct. 2005): 247-64.
