Submitted: December 22, 2012     Name:DepartmentHometown: Department: Theatre Arts
News:Central Washington University’s Central Theatre Ensemble (CTE) production of Icarus: A New Noh in English was selected to participate in the 44th regional conference of the Kennedy Center American College Theatre Festival (KCACTF) to be held in Sacramento, California, in February. Icarus was one of only four productions selected for the conference, out 217 productions submitted by 64 colleges throughout the region. Icarus: A New Noh in English, directed by George Bellah 3, CWU professor, theatre arts, was created after several years of intensive training in the style of traditional Japanese Noh style. Bellah was eager to fuse the western myth and eastern performance style together in a single piece of drama. He has studied the performance aspects of Noh, a form of classical Japanese dance theatre, with the Noh Training Project, in Bloomsburg, Pennsylvania, since 2008. He has spent considerable time in Japan studying with Noh teachers, including a month-long sojourn in Tokyo. The play was written by Elise Forier-Edie, CWU professor of theatre arts. Forier has won playwriting awards from the Columbia Entertainment Company, Artist Trust/Washington State Arts Commission, and others. She has twice been invited to develop her works at the National Playwright's Conference at the Eugene O'Neill Theatre Center. Kevin Salfen, professor, University of the Incarnate Word, San Antonio, Texas, created a compelling score that deftly combines Eastern and Western musical motifs and provides a subtle counterpoint to the enduring themes of Icarus. Icarus: A New Noh in English premiered on March 1, 2012, on the CWU Ellensburg campus, and was subsequently performed at the Asian Studies Development Program International Conference, in Seattle on March 30, 2012 CTE last entered a production for festival consideration in the fall of 2007, and was invited to perform at the February 2008 KCACTF Region VII Festival held in Laramie, Wyoming. KCACTF Region VII consists of colleges and universities from nine states: Colorado, Wyoming, Montana, Idaho, Washington, Oregon, Alaska, northern Nevada, and northern California. The goals of this national theater education program are to identify and promote quality in college-level theater production. To this end, each production entered is eligible for a response by a regional KCACTF representative, and selected students and faculty are invited to participate in KCACTF programs involving scholarships, internships, grants and awards for actors, directors, dramaturgs, playwrights, designers, stage managers, and critics at both the regional and national levels. Productions at the participating level are eligible for inclusion at the KCACTF regional festival and can also be considered for invitation to the KCACTF national festival at the John F. Kennedy Center for the Performing Arts in Washington, DC, and other awards, in the spring of 2013. Last year more than 1,300 productions were entered in the KCACTF involving more than 200,000 students nationwide. CWU has a tradition of incorporating Asian studies into cross-curricular activities. CWU is the only state institution that offers a Bachelor of Fine Arts degree in theatre and has 121 majors specializing in General Studies, Design and Production, Performance, and Musical Theatre.
Submitted: September 18, 2012     Name:Chris BruyaHometown: Department: Music
News:The music department has received invitations from the Jazz Educators Network (JEN, former IAJE) for the Jazz Combo 1 AND Vocal Jazz 1 to perform at this year's conference in Atlanta. That's correct, TWO groups representing CWU! This is the second year in a row that CWU will be represented at this national conference, this is quite an honor! In addition, this is the second national invitation the vocal jazz group has received in the past three years (ACDA in Chicago two years ago) and the second year in a row for the instrumental side of our jazz program. This seems to be a clear indication that our jazz program has distinguished itself as one of the best programs in the country. This is a fact that we are all aware of, but its always reassuring to have the validation with these prestigious invitations.

News:The CWU orchestra has been selected to perform at this year's NAfME Northwest Division conference in Portland. The NAfME Northwest accepted performance applications from six Northwest states: Alaska, Idaho, Montana, Oregon, Washington and Wyoming. Only a select few groups are chosen to perform at the conference, so it is quite an honor for our orchestra to receive this invitation. Once again I must say that this invitation is an external confirmation that our orchestra is one of the best university orchestras in the Northwest and is quickly making a name for itself nationally.
