CWU's Bergman to Carry Olympic Flame for 2012 Olympics July 11

July 2, 2012

ELLENSBURG, Wash. — Ethan Bergman, Central Washington University associate dean of the College of Education and Professional Studies, is one of 22 inspirational Americans chosen by the Coca-Cola Company to participate in the Olympic Torch Relay as part of the 2012 London Olympics. The Coca-Cola contingent will carry the flame through Oxford, England from July 9 to 11. Bergman will run with the torch through the neighborhood of Basingstoke on July 11.

The Olympic Flame will arrive in the United Kingdom on May 18 for the start of the relay, which will take place over the course of 70 days, leading up to the opening ceremony. Eight thousand people will carry the Olympic Flame through more than 1,000 cities, towns, and villages in the United Kingdom.

According to Coca-Cola, the extraordinary people selected to run in the Torch Relay represent tenets of Coca-Cola’s “Live Positively” philosophy through their commitments to the community, the environment, and healthy, active lifestyles. Bergman is a professor in the department of Nutrition, Exercise, and Health Science. Bergman is also the president-elect of the Academy of Nutrition and Dietetics.

Bergman said that since he was a runner already, he would just continue his normal training schedule—“it’s only a sixth of a mile, and I don’t think the torch is very heavy.” Coca-Cola is sponsoring his flight to England, and Adidas is providing the Torch Relay uniform. “But I’m also going to try to wear something with CWU on it!”
