Michael Szabo, bass trombone, Honolulu Symphony
Michael Szabo has held his position as Bass Trombonist with the Honolulu Symphony since 1998, during which time he has also been active as a soloist and chamber musician. Michael was honored to appear as a guest soloist with the Honolulu Symphony Orchestra in October, 2003. He performed Eric Ewazen's Concerto for Bass Trombone to critical acclaim, inspiring this comment from Ruth Bingham of the Honolulu Advertiser:”Michael Szabo, the symphony's bass trombonist, made the most of his infrequent shot at the spotlight, revealing careful intonation, a lovely tapering of phrases, and a beautiful tone, whether heroic or lyric.”
Michael has given recitals, made guest soloist appearances, and performed with chamber music ensembles such as the Honolulu Brass Quintet and the Manoa Trombones. He has performed with many Orchestras and Music Festivals worldwide, including the Cincinnati Symphony, the Naples Philharmonic, the Pacific Music Festival, Music Academy of the West and the National Repertory Orchestra.
Mr. Szabo grew up in rural Washington State outside of Seattle. He began his studies on the trombone and bass trombone at the ages of 10 and 16, respectively. Michael attended the Oberlin Conservatory of Music and the Cincinnati College-Conservatory of Music where he received both a bachelors and masters degree in bass trombone performance. His teachers have included Raymond Premru, Tony Chipurn and Kadie Nichols.
Michael and his wife, Fiona, are newly married, and are happily enjoying life together in Honolulu.
