TOTOS stands for Teachers of Teachers of Science. TOTOS is made up of Washington's university faculty members responsible for teaching science methods courses to future K-12 teachers, both graduate and undergraduate, tenure track professors and adjuncts. There are also faculty members who teach science content courses specifically for pre-service teachers such as a biology lab section for future teachers. TOTOS also includes people who work in support of science teacher education such as representatives from the Office of Superintendent of Public Instruction.
- The focus of TOTOS is on teacher preparation, including content, pedagogy, curriculum, and assessment.
- TOTOS had 3-day meetings each spring hosted by Washington State University from 1999-2008. In 2009 the group met in Spokane with TOTOS-like faculty from Washington, Oregon, Idaho, Montana, and Wyoming. The meetings will be hosted by Central Washington University starting in 2010.
- Other meetings occur during the year, as appropriate, often in conjunction with the Washington Science Teachers Association annual conference. There have been special meetings for trainings such as how to conduct field investigations, Project Learning Tree and Project Wild facilitator trainings, and strategies for subject integration.
- Some years TOTOS has a theme to the meetings such as assessment, informal science education, research, and environmental education. Environmental/sustainability education was a focus of several meetings during the years of the U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service and Environmental Protection Agency grants.
- The group works hard and plays hard. TOTOS enjoys social occasions in order to become friends, as well as colleagues.
