As a supplement to our scholarship program, which is designed for recruitment
and diversifying the talent pool, we are developing a semi-professional
internship program as the focus of our retention efforts. A Theater Arts
major, who is a continuing student at the Junior Senior level, would qualify
for a CTE Internship. Two different components make up the internship
and consists of:
1) Paid Component
- 3 Hours per week at, or slightly above, the minimum wage
2) Unpaid Internship Component
- Register for 1 credit hour per quarter = Working 4 hours week per
credit
- Can earn up to 12 credits of TH 490 Cooperative Education
- Up to three credits of 490 may be substituted for Theatre Lab (493)
What is in it for the student?
- Paid hours in the shop of their choice (Approximately $300 per quarter)
- Leadership opportunities
- Semi-professional internship credit with CTE
Students will apply for positions focusing on the following:
1. Why are you interested in an internship at this time? Why have you
chosen CTE?
2. What qualities, skills, interests make you the best candidate for
this CTE internship?
3. What are your career goals? How will an internship at CTE help you
to achieve them?
Bridging To A Professional Career
CTE Intern Program offers students a bridge between college and career.
The program is practical, intense, and fully supportive of the individual.
It provides the opportunity to explore, reinforce or redirect career
goals.
CTE's Internship Program provides an opportunity to work under our professional
staff, helping to support the high quality production standards for
which CTE continues to receive numerous accolades The Program offers
qualifying, creative, and ambitious theatre students the opportunity
to work and learn alongside an accomplished company of theatre professionals:
artists, administrators, and guest artists at Central Theatre Ensemble.
The partnership between CTE and the intern is intended to fulfill as
many career-building goals and objectives as possible and to provide
the intern with a variety of professional contacts and craft-building
experiences. The internship program can include any aspect of theatre,
including: management; stage management; set, costume, sound and lighting
design; acting and directing.
Students must first successfully complete a pre-internship (Theatre
166, 261, 267, 268, 269, 393 [3]) and is most likely at the junior or
senior level. This introduces the student to the specialty basics, defines
the specific area of study and establishes the working relationship
with CTE. After successfully completing the internship prerequisites,
the student may then pursue an internship (Theatre 490). Interns accepted
into the program generally begin work in September and would continue
upon successful evaluations and funding availability.
ABOUT OUR INTERNSHIP PROGRAM
The Internship Program includes a scheduled informal seminar each quarter.
These talks are conducted by administrative department heads, production
staff supervisors and/or guest speakers, with the goal of providing
insight into the operation and inner-workings of a professional theatre.
Each intern participates in evaluations bi-weekly and includes in a
discussion with the intern's supervisor(s) and the Internship Coordinator
about job performance, evaluation of the work relationship between the
intern and the supervisor(s) and how best to meet the intern's and CTE's
expectations.
CTE's Internship Program offers a rich and challenging experience to
qualified students preparing for careers in professional theatre. Interns
have the opportunity to apply their practical skills and refine their
critical thinking through close interaction with CTE staff and artists,
as well as through the exchange of ideas with their fellow interns and
their independent exploration of educational theatre community.
The level of responsibility entrusted to CTE interns requires that,
in addition to demonstrating competence in their specific area of interest,
they must also be mature, self-reliant, work independently as well as
the ability to work effectively in a highly collaborative environment.
Excellent communication skills and often a basic knowledge of computing
are also essential. The performance of errands and routine clerical
tasks is a normal part of every intern's day.
Central Theatre Ensemble is an equal opportunity employer.
