Theatre Arts Department: Concrete Dreams |
It is 1968 in rural Ohio and the new Interstate is going in. This is good news for the folks on the Interstate, but not for the Kemp family, who owns and runs a SOHIO gas station on the old freeway. As the business struggles for survival, brothers Virgil and Louie Kemp, wait for their surly father to die, or sell the business, so that they can gain the inheritance they have been waiting and planning for all their lives. Add to the mix, a sister, Leona, a former trophy-winning stock car driver turned Hasty Tasty waitress, and you have a rural comedy with characters recognizable to anyone who has ever lived in a small town. This play marks the first Faculty Showcase, a production starring, designed, and in this case written, by Theatre Arts Department faculty and staff. Concrete Dreams features George Bellah, Michael J. Smith and Leslee Caul as the Kemp siblings, and local talent Don "Doc" Childress as Daddy. "The play is really about what happens to folks who spend their whole lives hoping and dreaming for something that never happens," - Playwright, Brenda Hubbard. |
