| MICHAEL J. SMITH (Associate Professor and Artistic
Director) teaches acting, voice, directing, and a number of courses
in the Drama Teacher's Summer Institute. Smith earned his B.A. in
Theatre from California State University at Fullerton and his M.F.A.
in Directing from the University of Oklahoma. He has taught and
directed at Whitman College and the University of Oklahoma. Smith
has acted, directed, and choreographed professionally. Smith has
many credits from regional theatres throughout the Northwest, including
originating the role of Reed Gibbs in the Seattle Repertory Theatre
production of The Ballad of Soapy Smith. He has done extensive
commercial work and is a member of AEA, SAG, AFTRA, and VASTA. Smith
has also appeared in several plays at CWU including The Crucible,
Ah! Wilderness, A Midsummer Night's Dream, Man of La Mancha
and most recently Concrete Dreams. Smith has also directed
CWU productions of Peter Pan, The Baby Dance, Oh, Coward!, Oklahoma!,
Laughter on the 23rd Floor, The Laramie Project, West Side Story,
Frankenstein and The Foreigner. This season Smith
will direct The Importance of Being Earnest, co-produce
the Dr. Betty Evans Original One Act Festival and directed the Studio
project Steam Boatin' Days.
