Musical Theatre Summer Conservatory

Red Curtain Review: Twice the Fun

 

 

Upon acceptance you will be emailed a 2008 Conservatory Registration Packet which you (and your parents if you are under 18) must complete and return by May 1 for the early bird discount and no later than June 1 with your payment in full.

Fees:
Full program, including all workshops, activities, room and board: $1,630 ($1,980 for private room)]
A limited number of local commuting students are invited to participate for a fee of $1.335, which includes all workshops, activities, lunch and dinner.

  • Students registering prior to May 1, 2008 receive a $100 early bird discount.
  • After acceptance, a $650 deposit is required to hold your space, with full payment due by June 1, 2008.
  • Cancellation prior to June 15, 2008 receives a full refund less a $100 processing fee.
  • Fees are non-refundable after June 15, 2008.

Scholarships:

Several $500 talent-based scholarships are available. Scholarships will only be available to those participating in on-campus auditions or other announced audition locations shown below.

Faculty and Staff:
DR. TERRI L. BROWN, head of the Musical Theatre program at CWU, brings more than 20 years of professional experience to her role as Director of the Musical Theatre Summer Conservatory. Her professional credits include a 17-year stint as a recording artist with Nirvana Productions in Los Angeles singing and performing for various projects including rock videos, TV appearances, commercial and voice work, and children's records. She has appeared in literally hundreds of musical theatre productions and has toured with companies throughout the world.
DAVID M. BROWN, musical director of MTSC and CTE, has played lead trumpet with Harry James Orchestra, several regional symphonies, and has conducted a number of musical theatre productions throughout the country, as well as touring and recording with international rock groups.
ANNELIESE CHILDRESS, choreographer and MTSC dance instructor, has served as a director, choreographer, actor and dancer at high schools, colleges, community and regional theatres throughout the country. Childress was a member of the Gus Giordano Jazz Dance company of Chicago and an ensemble member at The 5th Avenue Theatre in Seattle.
DAVID BARNETT, CTE technical director, will offer workshops on stage crafts, stage painting and more for the new Musical Theatre Summer Tech Conservatory. Barnett has served as TD for dozens of shows at CWU and has worked professionally as a TD and set designer for numerous companies, most recently Idaho Repertory Theatre
CHRISTINA BARRIGAN, CTE resident lighting designer, will offer workshops on stage lighting and help Musical Theatre Summer Tech Conservatory participants design the Red Curtain Revue: Two Times the Fun. Before joining the faculty at CWU, she worked as a freelance artist, working in opera, dance, theatre, ballet, independent film and performance art. Most recently she worked on an international multi-media production of “The Magic Flute” in Texas, Mexico and Costa Rica.
JERRY DOUGHERTY, CTE production manager, has worked in opera, dance, theatre, and musical theatre as a production manager, technical director and designer. He has also worked with Colorado Dance Theatre, Waco Children's Theatre, Austin Theatre for Youth, Sharir+Bustamonte Danceworks, and KNVA TV 54 in Austin, Texas, among others. He is the house rigger for the Capitol Theatre in Yakima, WA, and will lead a stage rigging workshop for the Musical Theatre Summer Tech Conservatory participants.
SCOTT R. ROBINSON, chair of the Department of Theatre Arts and CTE resident costume designer, will provide his skills as an administrator to oversee smooth operation of the Conservatory. Robinson is an internationally renowned theatre artist and administrator.
LESLEE CAUL, director of marketing and development for CTE, joined the Theatre Arts Department in 1994 and has established a vibrant and growing marketing department. Caul also manages the Box Office, and coordinates the Youth Theatre Tour, and many special events, including social events for MTSC.
STAFF - A core group of trained counselors will be living with participants, participating in workshops and other activities.

2008 Overview:
CWU again offers a unique educational opportunity for you to engage in serious study of musical theatre. July 5-19, 2008, you can enjoy 15 days of musical theatre intensive workshops on the beautiful CWU campus, where you will work with professional performers and educators in all areas of musical theatre in a residential setting. The program is open to students at the high school (grades 10-12) and college level, who have at least one year of acting and musical theatre experience. At the end of the session you will share your new-found skills in two performances for the public.
You must audition to be a part of the excitement!

NEW THIS YEAR
Musical Theatre Summer Tech Conservatory!

This year we are happy to expand the program to include design/technology opportunities. If accepted, you will participate in the 2008 Conservatory as assistant design coordinators and stage technicians in all areas of production. Standard Conservatory fees apply and course credits will be made available. An exciting experience awaits you with a variety of workshops presented by theatre professionals. Armed with a vast array of information from your daily instruction, you will work to create all design and technical aspects of the big show!

Lodging and Meals:
Students will stay in a residence hall on the beautiful CWU campus, double occupancy arranged by gender and when possible by appropriate age. Private room is based on space available and will require additional fee. Meals will be provided cafeteria style in one of the designated university food service locations. The new Student Union and Recreation Center is the home of the university store, a state-of-the-art recreation center, additional food court and convenient store.

Out-of-state participants should contact the Department Chair to arrange airport shuttle service and any other accommodations.

Course Credit: Limited course credit can be earned at the Conservatory for transfer into CWU Musical Theatre and technical programs for an additional fee. Courses include:
