WANGARI MAATHAI
Wangari Maathai
April 28, 2008
Wangari Maathai Student Union Ballroom, 4:00 p.m. The 2004 Nobel Peace Prize winner for "her contribution to sustainable development, democracy and peace," Dr. Wangari Maathai has become one of the most influential global activists of our time. Founder of The Green Belt Movement - a Kenyan-based non-governmental organization of women who combat deforestation and soil erosion by planting trees - Professor Maathai takes a holistic approach to sustainable development that embraces democracy, community development, and human and women's rights. She combines science, social commitment and active politics to do more than simply protect the existing environment: Prof. Maathai's strategy is to secure and strengthen the very basis for ecologically sustainable development. A former dissident and political prisoner, Prof. Maathai was elected to parliament in 2002 and now serves as Deputy Minister of Environment. |
