Takushoku University was founded by Duke Taro Katsura in 1900, with the aim of "rearing personnel equipped with an enterprising spirit, the culture and dignity that can win trust from all other nations." It has earned an enviable reputation as a university that takes the lead in academic research, a first-rate reputation based on its history and tradition. In addition to academics, Takushoku University boasts numerous athletic and cultural clubs. Currently, some 10,000 students are studying at Takushoku University, about 6,000 at Bunkyo campus. Additionally, 200 students are pursuing advanced degrees in the graduate schools, and about 1,100 students attend two junior colleges. Some 150 foreign students are currently studying at Takushoku University. Students participating on the CWU exchange take their classes at the Bunkyo campus.
Takushoku University is located in the heart of Tokyo, the capital of Japan. Tokyo is something of a miracle, a city that has literally risen from the ashes to become one of the world's leading economic centers. Tokyo is a very cosmopolitan city, spreading out across the Kanto Plain from Tokyo-wan Bay. For visitors, nearly everything of interest lies either on or within the Japanese Railroad Yamanote line, the rail loop that circles central Tokyo.

In addition to academic strength, acceptance is based on personal commitment, flexibility, and suitability for study abroad/exchange. 'Current disciplinary record' is defined as an infraction within the last 12 months.

Takushoku University offers a Japanese as a Second Language Program. In addition, students can enroll directly at Takushoku University, which offers many elective business courses. In addition to the Faculty of Business, Takushoku University also has a Faculty of Commerce, a Faculty of Political Science and Economics, a Graduate School of Commerce and a Graduate School of Economics. All courses are taught in Japanese, and direct enrollment courses are taken with Japanese students. Special tutoring may be arranged for certain direct enrollment classes such as Business, Economics, International Relations and Trading, Korean History, Law, Literature, Media Studies, Music, Politics, Religion, Sociology and Women's Studies. Students accepted to attend Takushoku begin studying in April and finish in March of the following year. Some September through September placements may be available, though please note that the coursework for these students is different. Students starting in September would take Japanese as a Second Language for the first semester, and then spend the second semester in direct enrollment classes taught in Japanese. There is an extended summer recess, as well as a 3-week break starting mid-December.
