Musica Antiqua Series Continues at CWU

The Department of Music will present the second of this season’s Musica Antiqua concerts in the Recital Hall of the McIntyre Music Building at 4 p.m. on Sunday afternoon, January 6.  This concert will feature trio sonatas of C. P. E. Bach performed by Hal Ott, Denise Dillenbeck, Michelle Vaughn, Maija Hendersen, Jen Moultine and Margret Gries. While the trio sonata was the most common form of composition during the early eighteenth century, C. P. E. Bach’s compositions represented the best of the new “galant” style: melodic, emotional, expressive and exciting. This son of J. S. Bach provided the foundation of a new kind of music, a far cry from the studied counterpoint his father’s generation, and pointed the way towards a style that culminated in elegant, cohesive structures of the classical music of Haydn and Mozart. So influential was his music that Haydn regarded him his progenitor, saying “He is the father; we are the children”. This recital is free and open to the public.
