Science Talent Expansion Program

The Science Talent Expansion Program (STEP) at Central Washington University is a program whose goal is to increase recruitment, retention and performance in the fields of Science, Technology, Engineering, and Mathematics (STEM).

Funded by a grant from the National Science Foundation for the years 2007-2011, STEP consists of two major components:

  1. Freshman Science Seminar Series
  2. Bridging Program for CWU sophomores and transfer students

STEP Freshman Science Seminar

The STEP Freshman Science Seminar Series is an innovative and exciting science program designed for students in their freshman year at Central Washington University. It consists of an integrated sequence of classes and enrichment activities in which students will gain hands-on experience in modern scientific research methods, explore theme-based interdisciplinary scientific issues, and develop mentoring relationships with CWU science faculty. Application to the program is open to all students with an interest in and aptitude for Science, Technology, and Mathematics (STEM) fields.

Bridging Program for sophomores and transfer students

Students who participate in the Freshman Year Science Seminar and transfer students can apply to participate in a research, teaching, or outreach experience, mentored by a CWU faculty member. Exceptionally qualified applicants are eligible to receive a stipend when they participate fully in the STEP Bridging Program. For more information, contact Dr. Andy Piacsek, Bridging Program coordinator, at 509-963-2723, or send email.
