Science Talent Expansion ProgramThe Science Talent Expansion Program (STEP) was launched in 2003 with a grant from the National Science Foundation. STEP is a program that focuses on increasing the total number of students obtaining STEM (Science, Technology, Engineering, and Mathematics) degrees at Central Washington University and the number of traditionally underrepresented students in STEM undergraduate majors. Underrepresented students are defined as low-income, ethnic and racial minorities, women, persons with disabilities, and first generation college students. It is the goal of the Science Talent Expansion Program to provide direct, significant, and sustained benefits to the student population; to recruit and retain students in STEM fields through academic support and mentoring; and to direct students equipped with essential knowledge and skills, toward successful STEM careers. Currently, there are seven departments at Central Washington University that participate in STEP. These include: Biological Sciences, Chemistry, Computer Science, Industrial and Engineering Technology, Geological Sciences, Mathematics, and Physics.
Hands-On ExperienceSTEP is comprised of an integrated sequence of classes and enrichment activities that allow STEP students to gain experience in modern scientific research and engineering methods, explore theme-based scientific issues, and develop mentoring relationships with STEP faculty and staff members. Sophomore and transfer STEP students have the opportunity to participate in the STEP Bridging Program, which offers positions in research, recruiting, and teaching. STEP activities help students to develop long-lasting problem solving and critical thinking skills that are essential in STEM careers. Academic and Social SupportSTEP students have the support of STEP faculty members, STEP staff members, and other STEP students. There are opportunities for STEP students to pursue tutoring in the various STEM disciplines offered at CWU. STEP students are able to get personalized help with homework, projects, and studying. In addition, STEP students have a chance to join the STEP Living Learning Community located in Kamola Hall. The STEP LLC gives students an opportunity to connect with other STEP students in a shared residence and opportunities to build valuable social and academic connections. Please refer to the STEP Student Resources. Financial SupportSTEP offers a special financial aid opportunity for tuition and books, which is available to freshman students who have been accepted into STEP and who submit a FAFSA application. Continuation of aid beyond fall quarter of the freshman year is dependent on academic performance. Additionally, the STEP Bridging Program offers sophomore and transfer students an opportunity to have paid student positions. When applying to STEP, for freshman students to be eligible for STEP financial aid opportunities:
OutcomesSTEP provides students with added academic and social support, which increases their success and progress towards a STEM degree and future STEM career. STEP also provides students with challenging and stimulating activities that help to develop critical thinking and problem-solving skills that are essential for success in STEM careers. The Science Talent Expansion Program serves CWU freshman students, CWU sophomore students, and CWU transfer students.
