Symposium On University Research and Creative Expression

OBJECTIVES

SOURCE is a university-wide forum that showcases all genres of scholarly work by CWU students, faculty, and staff.

In 2007, SOURCE combined the Symposium on Undergraduate Research and Creative Expression and the Conference on Graduate Student and Faculty Scholarship. The goal was to foster an awareness of and appreciation for the high-quality scholarship that goes on at CWU, in all disciplines and at all academic levels. SOURCE 2009 continues that tradition.

The SOURCE event will be a day of presentations and performances, planned for Thursday, May 21, 2009.

Any students, faculty, or other employees of CWU who engage in scholarly activity and wish to share the results of their scholarship with the campus community are encouraged to participate. Examples of scholarship include scientific, historical, literary, or educational research, as well as creative writing, musical and theatrical performance, or artistic composition.

FORMAT

Student presenters must work in collaboration with a faculty mentor. Participation may take the form of an oral presentation, a poster presentation, or a performance; 2-dimensional and 3-dimensional artwork is also welcomed, including video or installation art.

There are three standard presentation formats (described below). Alternative presentation formats will be considered; please contact Clay Arango for more information.

  • Oral presentation: Fifteen minute talk with optional visual aid, such as Powerpoint or overhead projector. There will be a three-minute question & answer period allotted for each talk and a two-minute transition time. Talks will be scheduled 20 minutes apart.
  • Poster presentation: A single board no larger than 3 feet high by 4 feet wide that is ready to hang on a wall. Larger poster sizes may be considered by special request. Please contact Christina Barrigan for more information. Posters should be on display throughout the day while authors need to be present at their poster only during the poster presentation session.
  • Performance: 12 minutes, plus 3 minutes for audience feedback/questions. Performances within a session will be scheduled 15 minutes apart.

AWARDS

Awards will be given for outstanding presentations in each session, as well as in recognition for select faculty mentors.
