Introduction

Today we are seeing more and more young students developing food allergies and as a young person it is difficult to know how to deal with this.  You all know that I am allergic to wheat and soy and this is something that has been extremely difficult for me to adjust to.  Food allergies is something that everyone needs to be aware of and know how to deal with them if they are allergic to a type of food.  My task for you is to research a food allergy and make two full day meal plans, one being where you are going to be making and preparing your own food from home and the other where you will be eating out at at restaurants all day.

Task

For this project you and a partner are going to be researching a certain type of food allergy that I will assign you. With more and more people getting food allergies these days I feel that it is important for you to know what the affects of living with a food allergy are and how you can manage and deal with it.

You and your partner are going to come up with two full day meal plans for the food allergy that you have. Day one is going to be where you are going to go grocery shopping at the store and get food for breakfast, lunch, and dinner. With this you are going to have to look at the costs of the items and see how much more expensive it is to buy certain types of food. If you cannot find the price of the food try and go to the grocery store to get the price.

For day two you are going to be making a meal plan for going out to eat at a restaurant for breakfast, lunch, and dinner. You are going to also have to keep track of how much money you are spending on you meals when you eat out.

All of this is going to be done in a notebook format. In the beginning of your notebook you are going to have the first two pages be research that you have found on the allergy and how it effects the person and how to cope with it. Next you would have your two day meal plans and then at the end of your notebook you will write a reflection on what you have learned from doing this project, one page. Make the notebook fun and creative, use pictures and color to make the notebook more appealing.

The Process

When you are putting together your notebook you may want to ask yourself:

Resources

Use this space to point out places on the Internet (or physical resources in the classroom) that will be available for the learners to use to accomplish the task. Embedding the links within a description of the resource will also assist your learners to know in advance what they're clicking on.  Although there are five links below, you may have more or less than five -- depending on what is required by your WebQuery. If you are working with very young children or the task is to be conducted fairly quickly, you can reduce the number of links. If your students are older or the task requires more time to complete, increase the number of links. Also, the more choice you give your students in terms of their task the greater the number of links they will need.

Evaluation

Located below is a rubric of what each student is expected to complete as their project.  Each section will be graded separately and in order to gain the maximum points students must complete in detail every section of the rubric.

Conclusion

In the completion of this project I hope you have gained a new perspective on how being allergic to certain foods can effect your choices of eating and how to deal with them.  Through this project each student should have learned how a person with a certain allergy would deal with this situation. This project should also help the student understand how much time and planning goes on when you are dealing with a certain type of food allergy and also how expensive it can be. So, if you ever get a food allergy later in life, like me, you will have some common knowledge of how to cope and deal with it.
