Lesson Plan

Jumping for Height, Distance, & Accuracy

By: Megan Serna

1. Objectives (Specific, Behavioral, Assessable)

A. Student:

1. By the end of the class, students will be able to jump for height, distance, through a ladder and in a zigzag pattern using proper jumping form 80% of the time.

a. Students will bend their knees prior to jumping each time for proper form.

b. Students will thrust their arms in an upward motion while jumping each time for proper form.

c. Students will try to enhance their jumping distance and accuracy each time.

B. Teacher:

1. Teacher will demonstrate proper jumping form for each task, give minimal but accurate directions, organize the class, tell type and quantity of exercise and give specific feedback throughout the lesson for all students.

2. Health and Fitness EALRs:

1. The student acquires the knowledge and skills necessary to maintain an active life: Movement, physical fitness, and nutrition.

1.1 Develop fundamental and complex movement skills, as developmentally appropriate.

1.2 Safely participates in a variety of developmentally appropriate physical activities.

1.3 Understand the concepts of health-related physical fitness and develop and monitor progress on personal fitness goals.

2. The student acquires the knowledge and skills necessary to maintain a healthy life: Recognize patterns of growth and development, reduce health risks, and live safely. To meet this standard the student will:

2.1 Recognize patterns of growth and development.

3. NETS EALRs:

3. Research and Information Fluency

d. process data and report results. ( Students will report the findings of their individual heart rate monitors and record their finding in a written document.)

4. Critical Thinking, Problem Solving, and Decision Making

c. collect and analyze data to identify solutions and/or make informed decisions. (Students will have to decide from their information, whether or not they were in the proper heart rate category as indicated by the teacher.)

6. Technology Operations and Concepts

a. understand and use technology systems. (Students must know how to read the iformation calculated by the system and record their data founded.)

4. Instant Activity:

Students will get into groups of 3 or more depending on class size. Before we begin each group member will write on a piece of paper how many turns of the jump-rope they think they will get in 1 minute. They will then add up all of their predictions. Once all group members have completed their predictions, I will time then for 1 minute jumping rope. After the minute is done each student will write down their individual number, then as a group they will add their scores. Lastly, the team that was closest to their prediction will win.

5. Set Induction:

Gather the students in front of you (teacher). Ask, ÒWho has ever played a sport that involves jumping?Ó Then ask them, ÒTo name some of those sports that involved jumping and how?Ó Lastly, you will tell them, ÒToday, we are going to be learning how to use correct form while jumping in four different occasions. Hopefully, by the end of the lesson everyone will have leaned the proper techniques for jumping and improve their jumping form and ability when they play those sports that involve jumping in the future.

6. Content Development--- below

7. Closure/Assessment:

After students have completed the lesson, gather them for a closure to the lesson. Ask them, ÒWho can tell me two techniques to use when jumping to improve their form and accuracy when jumping?Ó Also, you can ask them, ÒWhat sports do they play that they feel will benefit from using proper jumping form and why?Ó Lastly, tell them what they will be doing for their next lesson or what is to continue on in the next jumping lesson.

8. Equipment: (for a class of 27 students)

3 boxes (to jump onto)

2-3 ladders

22 cones

14 poly spots

List of duties for each station posted.

9. Protocol

When I say Go, go to designated area.

When I say Stop, stop what you are doing, hold equipment still and look at teacher for further directions.

When I say Bring it in, bring it in to the line I have designated at the beginning of the class.

10. Class Rules:

Have respect for yourself, others, and equipment.

Follow directions.

Put your best effort forth.

Watch out for others, to maintain safety.

MAF/Instructional Technique:

There will be four different jumping stations for this lesson. The first station is box jumps. At this station I will need 3 different sized boxes set up from shortest to tallest. I will also need cones set up at the end after they jumped onto the boxes and skipped down to the cones. The next station will have poly spots placed so students know where to run to, to jump. There will also be additional poly spots in the area so they are able to put them down to measure their distance. In addition, this station will have cones placed at the end after they jump and karaoke down. The next station will be a station with cones set out in a zigzag pattern. Also, there will be cones set up at the end after they jump and slide down to the cones. The last station will be ladders set down for students to jump through in various ways. At the end will also be cones set up so after they jump through the ladder they can jog down to.

Informing task #1: Those at the first station will pick a box of their choice and jump up twice. After the 2nd jump, you will then skip down to the coned area and repeat until stopped.

Extensions:

  •   Start at the higher box if you are taller.
  • Start at the lower box if you shorter.

Refinements:

  •       Bend your knees before jumping.
  •       Thrust your arms up as you jumping.

Applications:

  •   Try to use correct form about 80% of the time while jumping.

Informing Task #2: Those at the second station will run and jump from the poly spot already placed and then place the extra poly spot where you landed. Then karaoke to then cone and repeat until stopped.

Extensions:

  • Can jump off of 2 legs.
  • Can jump off of 1 leg.

Refinements:

  • Bend your knees before jumping
  • Thrust your arms up as you are jumping.

Applications:

  • HHTry to beat your last jump each time.

Informing task #3: Those at the third station will jump through the ladder and then jog to the cones and repeat until stopped.

Extensions:

  •       Jump through the ladder with both feet.
  •       Ski jump through the ladder with both feet.
  •       Jump through the ladder skipping one ladder.

Refinements:

  •       Bend your knees before jumping
  •       Thrust your arms up as you are jumping

Informing task #4: Those at the last station will jump in a zigzag pattern behind each cone and then slide down to the cone and repeat until stopped.

Extensions:

  • Jump slowly through the cones.
  • Jump fast through the cones.

Refinements:

  •     Bend your knees before jumping
  •     Thrust your arms up as you are  jumping

Informing task #5: After all task have been completed students will take the heart rate monitors off and set them up to the machine to read each monitor. After the software has read each students results they will then record their findings in a written document.

Extensions:

  •  Have students partner up
  • Have students work individually.

Application:

  • Have students write up a report of their individual heart rate records.
