Scholarship Central : Western Undergraduate Exchange Program

The Western Undergraduate Exchange (WUE) Program for Out-of-State Applicants*

The Western Undergraduate Exchange Program allows students throughout the western United States to enroll at a reduced tuition rate. Participating states include: Alaska, Arizona, California, Colorado, Hawaii, Idaho, Montana, Nevada, New Mexico, North Dakota, Oregon, South Dakota, Utah, (Washington), and Wyoming.

Funding for the WUE program is determined by the state legislature. Depending on the funding and the number of students interested there may be a limited number of WUE awards.

Requirements

Eligible students must:

  • Be admitted to CWU;
  • Have residency in one of the participating states;
  • Enter as a new freshman or transfer degree-seeking (baccalaureate) student (excluding senior transfer students);
  • Meet regular requirements for admission (provisionally admitted students are not eligible to participate);
  • High school students must have a minimum Admissions Index (AI) of 28;
  • College transfer students must have a minimum cumulative GPA of 2.5;
  • Transfer students with less than 40 college-level credits will have to meet high school requirements.

If students meet all the requirements listed above, they will be automatically considered for a WUE. There is no application to complete.The WUE is awarded once a year only to students starting in the fall of each academic year. The WUE program does not apply to summer quarter or to study abroad.

*Note: The Admissions Index (AI) is a "probability of success" indicator. The AI combines the cumulative GPA and standardized test scores (ACT or SAT) on a two-to-one ratio. The cumulative GPA counts for approximately two-thirds and test scores for one-third of the AI number. A lower cumulative GPA will require higher ACT or SAT scores in order to obtain a 28 AI (example: a 2.5 cumulative GPA with an ACT of 33 or SAT of 1470 = a 28 AI approximately). (AIs are subject to change).

How Does the WUE Work?

WUE tuition is based on the current in-state tuition, x 150%. The WUE scholarship waives a portion of the out-of-state tuition. Example of the WUE tuition cost for the 2008-2009 academic year (costs are subject to change and will be updated when available for the academic year 2008-2009):

  • Estimated tuition for out-of state students:
$14,714
  • Estimated tuition for in-state residents:
$ 4,842
  • Estimated WUE tuition (in state x 150%):
$ 7,262 Your Tuition Cost
  • Estimated amount waived:
$ 7,452 WUE

Note: This waiver does not include any miscellaneous fees (i.e. health, technology, and athletic fees).

Are WUE Scholarships Renewable?

Yes. WUE scholarships are awarded fall quarter of each academic year. They are renewable for up to four years or 225 credits,whichever comes first. This includes transfer credits, depending upon incoming class standing:

  • Freshman (0-44.9 credits)--4 years or 225 credits maximum, whichever comes first;
  • Transfer with sophomore standing (45-89.9 credits)--3 years, or 225 credits maximum, whichever comes first;
  • Transfer with junior standing (90-134.9 credits)--2 years, or 225 credits maximum, whichever comes first.

For the WUE to be renewable, students must:

  1. Maintain Satisfactory Academic Progress. For details, visit http://www.cwu.edu/%7Efinaid/SAP0708.pdf and
  2. Maintain continuous enrollment at CWU (no break in attendance, excluding summer quarter) with the exception of study abroad/exchange program (students must contact WUE coordinator of study abroad leave).
  3. Study abroad/exchange programs are not paid by WUE.

Note: No application is necessary to renew a WUE. The award will be renewed for a subsequent year if students meet the above requirements.

Can I Become a Resident of WA State While Receiving the WUE?

No. Time accrued while receiving the WUE award WILL NOTcontribute toward the length of time required to establish Washington State residency status. If you are or will be seeking Washington State residency, you must notify the Scholarship Office immediately. If you obtain Washington residency after receiving this award, your award will be canceled retroactively and may be subject to fines. WUE criteria are subject to change at any time without notification.

The WUE scholarship is designed for the student that wishes to go to college out-of-state, but wants to keep their home state as their state of residency. WUE students have no intention of becoming a resident of Washington State.

Note: *Residency is established through the Admissions Office. Please refer to the Office of Admissions for information.
