SAEM Code of Ethics
We, the division of Student Affairs and Enrollment Management at Central Washington University, uphold these values in this Code of Ethics. In addition to supporting national ethical standards in areas of student personnel in higher education, we seek to engage in ethical practices that support the mission of the university. Through open dialogue and inquiry, this code of ethics supports ethical decision making founded upon four key values: Student Focus, Professional Integrity, Collegiality, and Stewardship.

Student Focus We focus our work on the success of students by supporting and challenging students with sincere encouragement. As professionals, we seek intentional practices and follow through with mutual goals and outcomes. Our focus is on student development and the delivery of service. We partner with students, maintaining clear boundaries and balancing our roles as student advocates and professionals. Our departmental policies and procedures guide our practice while allowing for flexibility in order to enhance student success. To this end, we include student development theories in decision making, utilize assessment tools, and seek other methods of evaluation to improve services, programs and procedures.

Professional Integrity In teaching and learning, research, administration, and all aspects of university life, we strive for the highest standard of excellence. We honestly represent our work, and we acknowledge the ideas, efforts, and resources of others who contribute to our achievements. We recognize that personal and professional values and decision making may create conflict and we welcome authentic and open dialogue. We disclose potential conflicts of interest and reject inappropriate influences on our choices. We endeavor to make decisions that meet and exceed public and professional standards of honesty, competence, and fairness. We honor our agreements in the performance of duties and are consistent in decision making. We maintain confidentiality and respect the privacy of others.

Collegiality We seek to internalize and implement diversity of thought and experiences while learning, working, and living together. We extend hospitality to students, parents, families, visitors, guests, and participants in our programs. We consistently review and revise policies and practices to promote inclusion. We do not tolerate any form of discrimination, harassment, or intimidation, and we reject behavior that is degrading to ourselves or those around us. We acknowledge our failures and share our successes in order to strengthen our individual and collective character.

Stewardship We are responsible stewards of student, state, federal, and private funds. We work with colleagues and partners to direct funds, resources, and services toward their intended purposes. We do not make personal use of University assets, and we do not permit misappropriation of those assets to go unchallenged. Our actions promote economic and environmental sustainability.

Implementation of the Code of Ethics:

SAEM has existing policies, procedures, and outcomes related to academic honesty, non-discrimination, use of University funds and resources. Upholding these basic values includes knowing and adhering to applicable laws and policies, while incorporating the spirit of these values into our decisions and actions.

Departments and Operating Units within SAEM may possess supplemental codes of ethics focused on their functional area. Furthermore, we expect and promote a high standard of excellence that supports the individual and team commitment that embodies the Division of SAEM.

How does the Code benefit us? The existence of the Code sets a common standard to unify us regardless of our specific job duties and service responsibilities.
  • The Code is meaningful and concise and should be consistently practiced to prevent it from becoming empty rhetoric.
  • The Code reinforces our expectation that we will use this standard to hold each other accountable.
  • We expect, invite and welcome collegial peer accountability.
  • During interactions with university colleagues, we can revisit, reference, and apply the Code.

Collectively, we encourage each department and operating unit to publicize and market the Code by posting it and including it as part of new employee orientation and training. We desire to be transparent with our intent to share the Code.

The Code magnifies and solidifies what we should be and serves as a living breathing document we can live by and build off.
