Prerequisites:

MSL 401 and 402.

Course Rationale (Purpose):

The purpose of this course is consistent with the University's mission: "to prepare students for responsible citizenship, responsible stewardship of the earth, and enlightened and productive lives". The College of Education and Professional Studies (CEPS) mission is" to prepare enlightened leaders for the professions and for society: Leaders who will contribute to and influence their respective professions; leaders who will commit themselves to socially responsible citizenship in a global society". This department's mission is to commission quality officers into the profession of arms. Each student will do a Risk management exercise, do a Decision Brief, and participate in a Military OPORD Briefing. The course examines: Leadership Styles, Team Building, The Risk Management process, Financial management, and Army Logistics.

Textbook and other required materials for the course:

MSL 401 and 402. Developmental and Adaptive Leadership.

Specific Learner Objectives/Course Topics:

  • Communicate effectively by giving a Decision Briefing.
  • Understand and implement how to coordinate activities within staffs.
  • Understand and conduct propeer subordinate counseling. (Blue Cards)
  • Develop and present Operation Order plans and briefings.
  • Conduct Risk Assessment and go through the Risk Management process.
  • Understand and implement a total fitness program.
  • Apply charateristics of the profession to officer service.

Instructional Methods and Activities:

The primary student learning activity will be lecture, hands-on demonstrations, and group interaction.

Assessment:

Demonstration of the student learner outcomes is specifically measured by the results of the Mentorship plan, Risk Management Exercise, and Decision Brief. Individual assessment will be done on the cadets ability to understand the staff coordination process, planning, preparing for and executing lab, and working with fellow cadets at the labs and staff meetings. The APFT is weighted most heavily based upon the importance of getting ready for commissioning and attendance at BOLC II.

Grading:

A "C" grade indicates that the student has made substantial progress toward meeting the course objectives of the course. The grades above a "C" are used for students who have demonstrated some degree of superiority. See the University Catalog for more details. All students on scholarships are reminded that they must obtain a "B" or better in this course.

An "I" means the student was not able to complete the course by the end of the term, but has satisfactorily completed a sufficient portion of it and can be expected to finish without having to re-enroll in it. See the University Catalog for more details.

You will be graded on a point system. There are 1000 points that can be earned in the following manner:

Mentorship Plan/Execution 100 points
Risk Management Exercise 100 points
Class and PT attendance 200 points
Instructor blue cards and lab participation 100 points
APFT/AR 600-9 300 points
Decision Briefing 200 points
Total 1000 points

Grading Scale is as follows:

92% or higher A
90 - 91% A-
88 - 89% B+
82 - 87% B
80 - 81% B-
78 - 79% C+
72 - 77% C
70 - 71% C-
68 - 69% D+
62 - 67% D

Class Policies:

Class attendance is mandatory for MSL 403, PT, and Labs. Exceptions will be made on a case by case basis. Those students who have three unexcused absences from PT or class will result in reduction of 25 points from MSL 403 class. Five unexcused absences from PT or class will result in 75 points from class. Six unexcused absences will result in a 100 point reduction from the 1000 point system.
