Course Title:MSL 401: Military ScienceFaculty Member Information:Instructor: LTC Gregory Solem: Professor of Military Science Prerequisites:MLS 301, 302, 303. Course Rationale:The purpose of this course is consistent with the University's mission: "to prepare students for responsible citizenship, responsible stewardship of the earth, and enlightened and productive lives". The College of Education and Professional Studies (CEPS) mission is" to prepare enlightened leaders for the professions and for society: Leaders who will contribute to and influence their respective professions; leaders who will commit themselves to socially responsible citizenship in a global society". This department's mission is to commission quality officers into the profession of arms. This course examines branch information, staff planning, training principles, counseling, values, military justice and ethics. Textbook and other required materials for the course:MSL 401, Developmental Leadership (provided by instructor). Specific Learner Objectives/Course Topics:
Instructional Methods and Activities:The primary student learning activity is through lecture, hands-on demonstrations, and group interaction. Assessment:Demonstration of the student learner outcomes is specifically measured by the results of the papers, quizzes and exams. Individual assessment will be done on the cadet's ability to understand the staff coordination process, planning, preparing for and executing lab and working with fellow cadets at the labs and staff meetings. The APFT is weighted most heavily based upon the importance of getting ready for commissioning and attendance at BOLC II. Grading:A "C" grade indicates that the student has made substantial progress toward meeting the objectives of the course. The grades above a "C" are used for those students who have demonstrated some degree of superiority. See University Catalog for more details. All students on scholarship must obtain a "B" or better in this course to remain in good academic standing. Incomplete Grades:An "I" means the student was not able to complete the course by the end of the term, but has satisfactorily completed a sufficient portion of it and can be expected to finish without having to re-enroll in it. Evaluation:You will be graded on a point system. There are 1000 points that can be earned in the following manner:
Class Policies:Class attendance is mandatory and includes daily class, PT, and Labs. Exceptions made on a case by case basis and extra make-up work will be done for those who cannot attend class. Bibliography - References:
