MSL 211: Land Navigation

Course Rationale (Purpose):

The purpose of this course is consistent with the University's mission, "by teaching we learn"; the College of Education and Professional Studies (CEPS), "to prepare enlightened leaders for their professions"; and this department's mission, to commission quality officers into the profession of arms. This course is a stepping stone in the process toward the goal of becoming a commissioned officer.

Textbook and other required materials for the course:

The Military Science Department provides all class material for this course. There is no uniform requirement for this course.

Specific Learner Outcomes:

  • Know and demonstrate an understanding of land navigation using a map and compass.
  • Identify terrain features on a map.
  • Plot locations using a coordinate scale and protractor.
  • Convert azimuths using magnetic declination diagrams.
  • Locate unknown points using intersection, resection, and modified resection techniques.
  • Understand and demonstrate use of the Lensatic compass.
  • Orient a map using a compass and terrain association.
  • Determine direction without a compass.

Course Topics:

The major topics considered in this course are:

  • Navigate using a Map and Compass
  • Use a Map Overlay

Instructional Methods and Activities:

The primary student learning activity will be lecture and demonstrations. The secondary instructional strategy is individual hands-on experience in navigational techniques and practices.

Assessment:

Demonstration of the student learner outcomes is specifically measured by the results of a mid-term, quizzes, hands-on, and final exam.

Grading:

A "C" grade indicates that the student has made substantial progress toward meeting the course objectives of the course. The grades above a "C" are used for students who have demonstrated some degree of superiority. See page 29 of the University Catalog for more details. All students on scholarships are reminded that they must obtain a "B" or better in this course.

An "I" means the student was not able to complete the course by the end of the term, But has satisfactorily completed a sufficient portion of it and can be expected to finish without having to re-enroll in it. See page 30 of the University Catalog for more details.

You will be graded on a point system. There are 400 points that can be earned in the following manner:

Class Attendance 50 points
Quizzes 200 points
Land Navigation Course 50 points
Mid-Term 100 points
Final Exam 100 points
Total 500 points

Grading Scale is as follows:

92% or higher A
90 - 91% A-
88 - 89% B+
82 - 88% B
80 - 81% B-
78 - 79% C+
72 - 77% C
70 - 71% C-
68 - 69% D+
62 - 67% D

Class Policies:

Points will be awarded for attendance, however, three unexcused absences from any of the above, inclusive, will result in a reduction of one letter grade from your final grade. Extracurricular points are earned for Color Guard, recruiting aid, FTX participation or any other authorized activity. All course requirements are mandatory. Failure to complete any course requirement will result in an Incomplete grade(I) being awarded for the course.
