MSL 102: Basic Leadership

Course Rationale (Purpose):

The purpose of this course is consistent with the University's mission, "by teaching we learn"; the College of Education and Professional Studies (CEPS), "to prepare enlightened leaders for their professions"; and this department's mission, to commission quality officers into the profession of arms. This course is the first course a cadet takes before assuming the responsibility and obligations of a contracted cadet. Students will have the opportunity to learn fundamentals of leadership theory, principles and techniques necessary for a military or civilian leader. Open to all students.

Textbook and other required materials for the course:

The Military Science Department provides all class material for this course. There is no uniform requirement for this course.

Specific Learner Outcomes:

  • Know and understand principles and factors of leadership.
  • Know and understand team development.
  • Understand and be able to perform first aid tasks.
  • Understand and be able to perform basic functions of a M16A2 rifle and M60 machine gun.
  • Understand and demonstrate navigation techniques.
  • Understand and demonstrate radio communication procedures.
  • Know and understand basic protective measures for chemical warfare.
  • Understand and perform basic drill and ceremony procedures.

  • Leadership Principles
  • Team Building
  • Map Reading and Navigation
  • First Aid Procedures
  • Functions and Marksmanship of Small Arms
  • Functions and Wear of a M40A1 Protective Mask
  • Install and Operate an AN/PRC77 Radio Set
  • Lead and Perform Basic Drill and Ceremony Movements

Instructional Methods and Activities:

The primary student learning methods are hands on demonstration and performance. Secondary instructional method is small group discussion.

Assessment:

Demonstration of the student learner outcomes is specifically measured by the attendance, class participation, mid and the final exam.

Grading:

A "C" grade indicates that the student has made substantial progress toward meeting the course objectives of the course. The grades above a "C" are used for students who have demonstrated some degree of superiority. See page 29 of the University Catalog for more details. All students on scholarships are reminded that they must obtain a "B" or better in this course.

An "I" means the student was not able to complete the course by the end of the term, but has satisfactorily completed a sufficient portion of it and can be expected to finish without having to re-enroll in it. See page 30 of the University Catalog for more details.

You will be graded on a point system. There are 500 points that can be earned in the following manner:

Class Attendance 50 points
Class Participation 100 points
Mid-Term 150 points
Final Exam 200 points
Total 500 points

250-244 A
243-237 A-
236-230 B+
229-223 B
222-217 B-
216-210 C+
209-203 C
202-196 C-
195-189 D+
188-192 D

Class Policies:

Class attendance is important. One unexcused absence automatically lowers the students grade to a "C". Two unexcused absences will result in an "F" grade. Participating in extracurricular activities will result in extra credit toward the students final grade. No uniform requirement for class attendance. All course requirements are mandatory. Failure to complete any course requirement will result in an Incomplete grade (I) being awarded for the course.
