MSL 101: Foundation of Officership

Course Rationale (Purpose):

The purpose of this course is consistent with the University's mission, "by teaching we learn"; the College of Education and Professional Studies (CEPS), "to prepare enlightened leaders for their professions"; and this department's mission, to commission quality officers into the profession of arms. This course is the first course a cadet takes before assuming the responsibility and obligations of a contracted cadet. It is an orientation into the military life. Relationship of academic major and minors to Army officer skills, jobs, and general life-style. Open to any student.

Textbook and other required materials for the course:

The Military Science Department provides all class material for this course. There is no uniform requirement for this course.

Specific Learner Outcomes:

  • Know and understand key aspects of the US Army as it relates to accomplishing duties as a commissioned officer.
  • Know and understand the US Army Reserve (USAR) as it relates to accomplishing duties as a commissioned officer.
  • Know and understand the role of the US Army in war and peace and as it relates to your duties as a commissioned officer.
  • Know and understand the roles of NCOs executing their duties.
  • Know and understand the role of the National Guard as it relates to accomplishing your duties as a commissioned officer.
  • Know and understand the branches of the US Army.
  • Describe and understand the four key fundamentals of basic rifle marksmanship.
  • Know and understand basic concepts of topographical maps.

Course Topics:

The major topics considered in this course are:

  • The Branches of the US Army
  • The Roles and Organizations of the US Army
  • The Roles of the US National Guard, US Army Reserve and DOD Civilians
  • The Roles of the NCO Drill and Ceremony
  • Army Customs, Courtesies and Traditions

Instructional Methods and Activities:

The primary student learning activity will be lecture and demonstrations. The Secondary instructional method will be hands on activities.

Assessment:

Demonstration of the student learner outcomes is specifically measured by the attendance and the final exam.

Grading:

A "C" grade indicates that the student has made substantial progress toward meeting the course objectives of the course. The grades above a "C" are used for students who have demonstrated some degree of superiority. See page 29 of the University Catalog for more details. All students on scholarships are reminded that they must obtain a "B" or better in this course.

Incomplete Grades: An "I" means the student was not able to complete the course by the end of the term, But has satisfactorily completed a sufficient portion of it and can be expected to finish without having to re-enroll in it. See page 30 of the University Catalog for more details.

Evaluation: You will be graded on a point system. There are 250 points that can be earned in the following manner:

Class Attendance 25 points
Lab 75 points
Counseling 50 points
Final Exam 100 points
Total 250 points

Additional points will be given for attending Military Conditioning on designated days.

250-244 A
243-237 A-
236-230 B+
229-223 B
222-217 B-
216-210 C+
209-203 C
202-196 C-
195-189 D+
188-192 D

Class Policies:

Class attendance is important. One unexcused absence automatically lowers the students grade to a "C". Two unexcused absences will result in an "F" grade. Participating in extracurricular activities will result in extra credit toward the students final grade. No uniform requirement for class attendance. All course requirements are mandatory. Failure to complete any course requirement will result in an Incomplete grade (I) being awarded for the course. All course requirements are mandatory.
