Lesson Title/Focus:

Planning a Vacation

Input:

Unit Overview: In this unit I am planning to teach students about traveling. I will be teaching them new vocabulary in Spanish. The vocabulary they will need to know in order to travel to another country to either Latin America or Spain. Some of the vocabulary words they will need to know are luggage, airport, tickets, hotel, room service, restaurant, bus, telephone, calling card, etc. When deciding where they will be going they will also have to tell us about the culture of that country. We will need to know everything from food, traditions, important days, customs, and the meaning or history behind an important object, for example, in Mexico the pi–ata, Òwhat is the meaning of the pi–ata?Õ.

Lesson Overview: In this mini lesson students will be making a PowerPoint to illustrate where they will be going, what kinds of things they will be doing such as sight seeing, where they will be staying, for how long, and how they plan on getting to this country. All these things will be done with a budget of $3000. So they will have to take into consideration, roundtrip tickets of transportation, transportation while at this country, food, shopping, what type of hotel they will be staying at, and other miscellaneous things. In putting this PowerPoint together students will also be adding pictures of themselves and of the places they will visit. On a later date they will present it to the class.

Instructional Materials Needed:

  1. Computer with Internet for research
  2. PowerPoint for presentation
  3. Excel Program to maintain their budget
  4. Scanner to scan pictures of themselves
  5. Overheard projector in case students need to show a picture
  6. English/Spanish Translation dictionaries
  7. Handout: list of recommended websites provided by the teacher
  8. Paper & Pencil for notes
  9. Atlas
  10. Rubrics

á      List of topics to be researched along with total points possible

á      Presentation requirements

á      Peer-Evaluations

á      Daily write up requirements handout

Objectives:

1.     Students will be able to work in groups while communicating effectively to then summarize their research to the class by creating a PowerPoint presentation.

2.     Students will be able to use Excel programs as needed in real life situations.

3.     Students will be able to apply the basic skills of planning a vacation to real life situations.

National Educational Technology Standards for Students:

  1. Creativity and Innovation

b. use models and simulations to explore complex systems and issues.

This standard is demonstrated in this lesson because every group is going to be given the same information but will come up with different work. No one will have the exact same plans as another group.

  1. Communication and Collaboration

c. develop cultural understanding and global awareness by engaging with learners of other cultures.

Students will be doing a lot of interaction and collaboration within their groups. Together they will have to make final decisions using each other ideas, for example, when they are researching, what websites to visit, filling out their budget sheet, and what their plans are for the trip. They will need to use a variety of technology to get their projects done. They will use scanners, computers and projectors as needed while doing their research as well as during their presentations. Lastly, if at all possible, each group will have at least one person from a different cultural background in them, for example, Latinos, Asians, African American, Caucasians, and Native Americans. By having diverse groups each individual will have something unique to contribute to the group.

  1. Research and Information Fluency

d. process data and report results

There will be a lot of research being done. Students will search for credible websites to use for gathering information and then later they will present to the class their data.

  1. Critical Thinking, Problem Solving, and Decision Making

b. plan and manage activities to develop a solution or complete a project.

c. collect and analyze data to identify solutions and/or make informed decisions.

Everyone will be given the same date for the project to be completed. Each group will have to come up with a strategy to meet the deadline. They will decide whether to work together on each topic or break the topics into chunks for each person to work on.

Each group will have to come up with solutions as to how to manage their money and not come out negative. In order to stay within their budget they will need to compare and contrast different hotel prices, transportation prices, for each day have a certain amount of money set aside, and money for miscellaneous things.

Grouping Students for Instruction:

Students will be working in groups of two throughout the entire unit.

Anticipatory Set: (10 – 15min)

To get the students attention before starting the lesson I will have discussion questions, for example, Òhas anybody traveled either by car, train or airplane to another state in the United StatesÓ, Òhas anybody visited a Spanish speaking country, such as Spain, Argentina, Mexico, Guatemala, Colombia, Cuba, if so, can you describe your preparation procedures, how you got there, what you have to do before getting to this state or country, what you did when you got there, and what kinds of things did you gain from that culture.

Modeling (Show): (10 – 15min)

During this time the teacher will briefly demonstrate examples of the project that other students did so they have an idea of what the finished product is supposed to look like and what kinds of things I expect to see on theirs.

Guided Practice (Follow me): (10 – 15min)

The teacher will hand out the rubrics for the project and explain what they are supposed to do and what is required for them to include on this project. On the rubrics students will find the minimum requirements for the project, presentation format and what I will grading them on, and how well they managed to stay within budget on their worksheet. She will explain what types of resources will be available to them in helping them complete their assignment, websites, books, technology and the teachers assistance.

Independent Practice: (2 – 3 class periods 40 – 50min)

The teacher puts the students into groups of two and releases them to start working on their projects.

Checking for Understanding/Questions: (5 – 8min at the end of the class period)

On a daily basis the students will turn in a write up about where they stand at the end of the class period. After reading the write up the teacher will determine whether to move on to the next topic or to allow more time for work. If the teacher notices that students are struggling she will help them catch up.

Closure: (~ 30 – 40min)

On the final day the groups will do their PowerPoint presentations.

Assessment Strategy:

The teacher will assess the students by using the rubrics given to the students at the beginning lesson. She will grade them on how well the students covered each topic and how well they presented their data to the class. As well they will be given a peer-evaluation sheet to grade their partner(s).
